I came home last night to find seven or eight slugs making their way across the aviary outdoor flight floor! Now I know that slug slime is dangerous for budgies so I want to know what other aviary owners do to try and keep slugs at bay. Other than putting slug pellets outside the perimeter of the flight which I am reluctant to do because of having three dogs. I know I can get supposedly pet safe pellets but I don't trust them completely.

i just asked my dad what he used ....before at our old house ...as i never needed any thing here ....for slugs ...he said he got a pint of stout drank half of it...... then put about 2" in a flat tray with bits of wood up the sides hanging over the stout ...the next day he would have to get out all the dead slugs ....as they cant resist stout fall in and drown . .

What about a layer of something very sharp- coarse grit maybe around the outside of the aviary? Just guessing though, I'm afraid I don't know...

They will infect your birds and they will die , they come looking for millet seeds, one reason why to never feed outside , i have DIATOMACEOUS EARTH, RED MITE POWDER, ORGANIC scattered inside the birdroom door , they crawl over this and they die..................................if you know where they are coming in spray the area with WD40, they cannor crawl over this.....................i would and do use slug pellets outside , they do not harm the dog.....................one of my friends lost most of his birds early this year due to slugs

I know not to do this because it attracts mice and rats as well as slugs. I will spray WD40 round the outside of the flight and buy some dog friendly pellets tomorrow ;D

My Aviary has aluminium carpet joiners running around the edge, and using a little time, i pointed the spikes upwards, The slugs dont like it up em Capt Mainwarring. But you may find the following information of use.
1. Slugs avoid crawling over anything dry, dusty or scratchy, such as lime, diatomaceous earth, cinders, coarse sawdust, gravel or sand. These make great barriers to keep out slugs.
2. Epson Salts sprinkled on the soil will help deter slugs and also help prevent Magnesium deficiency in your plants.
3. Vinegar, a good ingredient for slug sprays and removing slug slime.
4. Spread salt around your plants. Salt dries them out so they won’t go near it.
5. Collect human, dog, or cat hair and put around your plants, not only will the slugs not go on it, but it will also keep a lot of the little critters away also.
6. When you find a slime trail, destroy the track so other slugs do not follow. They will follow each others trail. There are certain plants that slugs hate like the strong smell of mint, chives, garlic, geraniums, foxgloves and fennel. Plant them around the edge of your garden to keep them out. These plants also discourage Japanese beetles.
7. Put stone paths along your flower beds.
8. Put Copper of foil barriers around plants that the slugs are eating. When the slugs cross them they are given a small shock. This also works for snails.
9. If you are find slugs in your potted plants, put petroleum jelly around the base and tops of your plant containers and watch them slip and slide.
10. Fill a shallow bowl with beer and wait overnight. The slugs love it. Dispose of the slugged brew by adding it to your comport.
11. Another slug formula: 1 part ammonia to 3 parts of water. One squirt on the slugs is all you need.
12. After eating your 1/2 grapefruit for breakfast, put it into your garden to make slug trap. Turn upside down after putting a small hole or two on the side for slugs to enter. They adore grapefruit and the slugs will gather there to eat the grapefruit and leave your plants alone. Collect the grapefruit and put into the compost bin.

I too have come across the stout "recipe". In fact I had the idea any beer will do. We have many horrible creatures, but slugs aren't one, thank heavens.
