What would be the best cage size for one Budgie. I have read a lot of differant things on the internet. Have a look through the link below. It shows you the kinds of cage some of the forum members have and will give you some good ideas. As you'll see, they are mostly wide, not tall. Budgies don't use the bottom of the cage, and the width is needed so they can flit from perch to perch, and also so you can easily hang or clip things you need to put in there easily. It also means that perches can be located in such a way that they don't poop on perches, food and water from above, which is better for them and also easier to keep clean. Minimum width for one budgie would be 46 cm or 18 inches wide. Also the bar spacing should be no more than 1/2 inch wide, so they can't get their head stuck in there. Some cages have wider spacing for bigger parrots. Don't let pet shop owners tell you different. They are trying to move stock and also don't always know that much about the real life requirements of birds. A nice simple rectangular shape is best for a medium sized cage. Some people have taller ones, but these types of cages are usually huge, not the smaller single budgie ones. You'll see what I mean on this thread. budgerigarsforum.proboards.com/thread/12/show-me-cage-set?page=1

Thanks Stace, I am always trying to give my pets the best, and Parrots have fasinated me for a long time. Most of us would recommend you get the biggest and best cage you can afford, just noting that minimum 46 cm width as a minimum. If you find a cage online, start a new thread and post it up on here before you buy and we'll give you an honest opinion on it, and maybe others can advise where to find something. Someone recently found a huge rat cage that was on sale for their budgies. Sometimes it pays to ask and hunt around.

Hi Barrie I got a baby budgie on friday he is only 34 days old today and totally found his wings/feet lol. I just wanted to ask is it normal for him to squeeze through the smallest of space's, for example he seems to like pushing his head up through his feeders & the feeder perch, he will the wiggle his body through the gap. He is also enjoying squeezing his whole body through one of his toy's. Is this normal for a young budgie who is discovering his cage? 1 more question, he has a perfect white star on the back of his head is this a permanent marking or do u think it will go as he grows up? I hope its for life coz he is a little star Any info would be great Cheers Jo

Perfectly normal baby-budgie behaviour. Photos would be needed to tell re markings.

I agree with Hezz.
Interested in the white star/spot and would like to see the pictures. It can be a mutation indication.

He appears to be a "Dominant Pied". They have a clear patch at the back of the head, which remains there throughout their life. Not necessarily, but the shape and size can change a little with molt.
