Went into a local petshop yesterday and they were selling baby budgies at 11 weeks old. The only chick left had scaly face on his beak and checks which by the looks of it is going untreated. What can I do? Feel like I should report it but don't know who too and I half felt like buying the poor little baby to make sure it gets the treatment it needs but I only just got sweetie and am pouring all my attention into her at the moment and I know that's not the right reason to take a pet on but it's really getting to me what can I do?

It's really awful. Same is the case here in pet shops. I give them medicines sometimes because it is not available locally. I don't know where can you report it but thanks for pointing it out. Maybe someone can do something.

Ok I think I will give my vet a call in morning and see if they can point me in the right direction. Poor little thing I can't get it out of my mind.

That would be a good move, I think too. If you can get your vet on side, surely the shop will have to do something about it! Good luck, Sweetie. I hope you succeed.

Hello You made no mention of telling the seller. Lots of pet shop owners/employees don't have the expertise one would expect. Did you try that route? .....B.J.

BJ the pet shop owner has been running the place since I was a little girl, he is a rude and confrontational man who would not take kindly to being told anything by the likes of me, so while this would be my first approach normally, in this instance not a good idea :/

then yes defernalty call your council and they should send someone out to take a look. A friend of a friend has just opened up a petshop and reasontly passed his vet inspection but apperantly they only need this inspection when getting the lience, (not sure if they have it again when renewing) then thats it unless someone complains. I think they realy should do at least 1 random inspection a year of petshops to make sure they are keeping up to standards.

I totally agree with you there should be an annual inspection, makes me so sad seeing little creatures living this way.

Good luck, Sweetie. I am sending you a little moral support to help you through, if needed. Hope all goes well.

This is one of the reasons I try never to go into pet shops. It just gets me really upset (and angry) and feeling powerless to do anything about it. Some are okay, but many are not. Random unannounced licence inspections would be a good idea. Like they do for food operators.
Our general treatment of animals, particularly those that we intensively farm, is pretty disgusting sometimes. One day, some time long in the future, we'll look back and wonder how we could have been so ignorant and so cruel.

Right. Have reported it to my council, they're going to send a spy in lol. They took my name and number and will keep me updated on how things go so I feel slightly less helpless now
