I bought Sweetie a snuggle hammock which is basically a little fabric hut with a hole in it. She uses it for a nest and lOves it but now she seems to spen a lot of her time in there and she uses it to hide in when I want to get wr out so I now end up removing the entire thi with her in it when it is excerise time lol. I don't know whether taking it awy is a good idea as the reason I got it is so she wasn't so exposed but also don't want her to become unsociable? Any ideas? X

My biggest bug-bear with these things is nibbling on the fabric. Second comes the poop factor. And third is thinking it can be used as a nest (but you haven't a cock, so that shouldn't be a problem).
Anything they obsess over isn't a good thing, especially single birds. If you don't want to remove it completely, limit her time with it, either every other week or change it around day by day. If you feel she is exposed, try throwing a cloth over part of the cage.

I'd get rid of it sweetie. Those huts have a bad reputation for causing problems, so it's not worth the risk.

ok, i think its best to get rid then, as ive just got her a new cage will let her have it for the next couple of days for security and then remove it, what the best kind of shelter to get her without her isolating herself but feeling safe at the same time or once they have a hide away do they tend to just 'hide away' lol? i dont wanrt to undo all our good progress by letting her hide all the time

I also have a problem with snuggle huts. Budgies are notorious for chewing fabric and Sweetie could easily chew it and then get threads wrapped around her legs or neck. Snuggle huts are really sweet I know but its not worth the risk. I made my own version of one but with a perch for the bottom. I will find you a photo of it now....here it is I used fleece material, like fleecey blankets as they won't get their nails stuck in it.

What about hanging a small plastic ice cream or mousse container up instead? You could put some newspaper in the bottom and a wooden perch across the middle... I don't know if that would be possible. I'm very wary of anything fabric since reading about Stace's little Boo getting very poorly after swallowing a bit of rope or similar from a toy.

I would def get rid of it soon as...I read a few horror storys about snuggle huts including one budgie that had chewed it and ended up getting between the two sides of the fabric and sadly suffocated, the owner only found her budgie when she returned home

Wasnt trying to treat her like a baby BJ, just make her feel safe. I have deleted Bird Junkys comment and sent him a message so don't worry about what he said. I know that you are doing everything you can to make Sweeties life a happy and fulfilled one ;D I'd also have to say you are doing it really well ;D

I don't think she needs anywhere to feel secure. If her cage is treated with respect she should feel secure in there without anywhere to hide. If you think she is nervous, as I mentioned before, why not just throw a cloth over part of the whole cage? She really should feel safe and secure in her cage.
Plus I feel now, with a new cage, is a great time to get some new toys and get rid of the thing.

Sweetie, my bird came close to death from eating a tiny bit of fibre/fabric. It took many many months and some serious specialist veterinary care over that time to bring him back to health. And he's still not 100 per cent, probably never will be again. Any time he eats anything slightly dodgy, we're back into sickness all over again.
As Hezz said, she really doesn't need a hide. She should feel safe in her cage as it is.
