Hi everyone,
my brother's friend's family showed me their budgie and told me that it was sick. The poor baby is so skinny, I haven't weighed it yet, but feels very very light. They told me that it tried to fly but came crashing down and can't move it's legs since. They figured it's leg was broken. It's leg is not broken, (because it was moving them) but it can't seem to grasp or open it's itty bitty toes. It falls to the side and can't support itself with it's toes, I will take a pic and post it soon.
help? I have taken the budgie for now-hoping to nurse it back to health, and help it with it's feet/toes. the conditions the poor baby was in,...incredible.

The falling to the side and not using it's feet seem to suggest a seizure/stroke type of reaction. But that doesn't explain why the bird is so skinny, unless this has been going on for a long time. Barrie has also mentioned heavy metal poisoning for these type of symptoms. Did you get to see the poor bird's set-up, any rust on cage or toys???
I hope you have some measure of success nursing it back to health, but be prepared with the knowledge that this may not be possible. Good luck, Nani.

Thanks Hezz. The cage was small, with a round top!! Too small for one budgie and too tiny for 2. Grr. I informed them about how bad round cages are and sizes. The poor baby had a dirty dirty bum. Dried poop caked on...I had to clean it off and it was so hard some of the little feathers came off with the poop. I felt so bad. But losing a few feathers is a bit better than a dirty smelly bum. Just unsanitary ya know? The cage didn't have any rust. I forgot to mention that the family had the cage in their workplace. They have a hair salon. They kept the birds in the backroom, I asked them if they kept the birds in the salon all the time or if it was just for today. They informed me the birds were there all the time.!!!!! WHAT??!!! FUMES everywhere! All that junk that goes in people's hair etc etc. I also educated them on those health hazards. So sad. They got the budgie simply because someone gave it to them. And then they added another one. The other one is probably 5 months old. They didn't know anything about budgie care. I did mention to them that the baby budgie may not survive, and that it was possibly neurological..exposed to toxins..etc etc. I don't think the poor bird has been able to eat. It is so light, the breastbone is easily felt. It's beak was pretty long too. I filed it down a bit and saw it weakly eating a bit. As it's a baby I made some baby bird formula and fed her a bit. She's a darling. I hope she pulls through. I completely forgot to ask them how long the budgie had been like that...oops. One day is too long anyway.

I agree with Mick. I didn't realise there was another budgie as well. But if possible get the other one out of there. All those toxins, poor little birds, has obviously affected the younger one more. And don't even mention they aren't getting the bird(s) back IF it/they manage to survive ICU. What a horrible life for the poor things! Well, one good thing - at least now they have contacted you and you are able to sort something out - even if it is only some TLC while the young one passes away! Better than not knowing any love at all! Good luck Nani; my thoughts are with you, and your very good deeds. You may have had some loses in the past, but that, unfortunately, is life, and hopefully here you will be able to make a difference for the better.

Thanks Barrie, Mick and Hezz. I have tried feeding baby bird formula, feeding one seed at a time...and I spoke to them and the baby was given to them at 4 weeks old! Baby never learned to eat..it never even had a chance as it was thrust into a hazardous environment. They don't want to give me the budgie....they want to buy another one (female) and breed them) Not good. Difficult to pursuade otherwise...hmm. Hezz, yeah I thought that if the baby passes then at least it'll know what TLC is. It was just sitting in it's own filth, and bird seed everywhere mixed in with poop and dirty dirty water contaminated with so much waste. They didn't even have proper food containers.nothing!! They had bottle caps as water containers. It made me mad because even if someone gives you a small animal, you choose to say yes or no. And upon making that choice you SHOULD research as much as possible and provide the most basic care. If I could, I'd get her checked out at the vet. But I am just at the end of my rope-what with Hunter being sick and everything. They have money, they have their own hair salon and to not even spend less than $100 on budgie supplies...is just sad and enfuriating. Here Jimmy works over 100 hours and I am flat lips broke and looking for a job, yet our pets come first. We make sure they have toys and food and an adequate cage/bed before we spend any of it. Sorry about my little rant. Just makes me sad to see the poor baby shaking. I'm off to buy millet and hopefully entice it with that. BTW I weighed her..she weighs 25 grams. Enough said there.!!!

Well done for taking her in, hopefully she makes it. Hows her walking now?
When i brought Ada home she was about 4-5weeks, she couldnt fly, couldnt walk propperly and would shuffel and crawl about and sit with her bum flat on the floor and couldnt stand on a perch or even stand up straight. She couldnt grip things either and would fall off things constantly. Her parents werent feeding her and her breeder didnt want her so i took her in. She is now allmost 2 years and can now walk but not normaly as one leg is weaker and can hop about from perch to perch and can sleep on one and has no problem gripping.
So if she starts eating and pulls through hopefully her walking will improve.

Another idea for feeding, have you tried eggfood with this little chick? I have found that the young are pretty fond of it too, or even some hard-boiled egg yolk? If you can get it eating some of this he should start to put on weight fairly quickly. Who lets a 4 week old chick go to another home? Is the other budgie living in the same appalling conditions? If so, I think you have the right to do what you can to have someone in authority remove the bird. Good luck with it all Nani. Hope the little fella perks up.

Thanks PPVALHUNDS, that was inspiring. I can only hope the same. I have tried feeding it baby bird formula..tried feeding it one seed at a time..and I have bought millet and tried to entice it with that- it doesn't even know what that is...I have also bought baby human food (gerbers vegetables etc) and I fed it..but.. I think it's lower beak is a tad bit too long. and has a little bit chipped off at the side. It seems to want to eat, but a couple seeds remain in the mouth underneath the tongue. It only dehulls the seeds but doesn't really seem to swallow the rest? And I've noticed her crop does not fill up at all! Her poops are not normal. Green with a bit of white and liquid around it...but not coiled around and so little- I imagine it's because she has barely eaten. I will try hard boiled egg yolk as the pet store is fresh out of eggfood...How is the egg yolk fed? Through a spoon? I weighed her again tonight and she has gained 0.5 grams. Her breastbone is still frightingly thin... I truly hope she makes it as she is a real sweetheart and was begging for scritches today She nibbles on my fingers until I scratch her cheek and around her eyes-she even bends her little head down-awww-just like a bonded pair does. In regards to her feet- they are weak. I can easily move them and stretch them and uncurl them. they aren't stiff or tense. More like weak- she closes her eyes when I massage them- is that because she is in pain? I have a bit of hope as when I spend a good 20 minutes massaging one foot, when she tries to walk she is able to stretch her toes a bit more whereas before it was just a loosely clenched foot dragging along. I've contacted an avian vet online and he suggested physiotherapy for it's feet-massaging them and stretching them, perhaps it will help. Suggested wrapping them in a small bandage and separating the toes (front and back) and wrapping around with vet tape. She really is cute. Hezz: Yes the other budgie was living in the same cage as her. It appalls me how people jump at the chance to own little birds-yet they don't bother with learning how to really care for them. or just want things for free. Did I mention that this same family a few weeks ago had asked me for one of my budgies? They had been given the first budgie for free, and asked me for one of mine. I thought they were joking and told them 'nnonononono..my babies are my babies" Then they were a bit more forceful trying to convince me "come one, it's a favor, you have soo many. One less won't hurt." Huh?? I flat out told them my family/pets/babies were NOT for sale, nor for giving away. It didn't matter if I had 100 or 30..not for sale or rehoming means NO. I even told them I'd give them the number of a budgie breeder who lived about 1/2 hour away from here and he said "what?? you want me to drive all the way there???!!" Rude eh? Shockingly he reluctantly ceased...only to turn around and ask my brother (who is friends with their son) to convince me to GIVE them one. Who does that? When I found out they obtained another one I just figured they kept it at home and whatnot you know? Imagine my surprise to see them in the salon.

i really do hope the baby makes it .... but its not sounding good ....cant you take it to a local breeder with chicks so it can get in with them and learn to eat then tell the people it passed on ...as i said i hope it makes it ...you are trying very hard ...also is there any one you can report them to for keeping birds in there shop ...even if they were healthy... which there not...... they get no free fly time .. .

I've just found this thread and I'm furious! There must be someone who can force them to part with the other budgie on the grounds it is being kept cruelly. You are doing a wonderful job with the baby. If she doesn't make it she has had so much love from you and that is the best thing you can give her. Are you syringe feeding her? It sounds so tough, it must be heartbreaking for you trying to get her to eat. My very best wishes and hopes for a recovery.
