One of my budgies, that I got last year from the sspca, has developed a lump. Covered in feathers I hadn't noticed it. It's a hard lump and the vet has seen her and doesn't know what it is, although he reckons it's on her abdomen. She still flies, eats etc and has always been a bit subdued. Her friend is fine. I'm not sure if the lump is getting bigger or not, and I don't want to risk putting her under anaestethic. Just wondered if anyone might know what it is?

Hi and welcome to the forum. It sounds like it could be a tumor. It could be a fatty tumor that can be helped by a change in diet. Hopefully someone with more knowledge will be online soon to help you. Did the vet give you any ideas? Let us know what your little girl eats. Whatever it is, it doesn't seem to bother her. Good luck and keep us posted.

'A lump' isn't exactly a detailed description, Shaza. Are you able to post up a photo or two of the offending lump so we can get some idea of where it is, what it looks like, size etc. Otherwise we would be simply guessing.

Good answers guys , i get both cysts and fatty tumours and in this case i suspect the fatty tumour is the problem

Hi all thanks for your comments, sorry I'm having a problem attaching the photos that I took of her. I added them through TinyPic but then got a bit stuck if someone can tell me an easier way? Or can I just email them to one of you? Re the note about her diet she gets trill, some millet and the odd green leaf. Exactly the same as her friend.
You can tell I'm new to the forum!

Had a look at that info thanks. Useful and I guess animals/birds get lumps and stuff just like people.
Vet did prescribe antiobiotics which I gave her for 10 days but it's not helped. The lump is hard which I realise isn't a good sign. I don't want to have to put her through an op or anything, unlikely such a wee thing would get through it.
Out of all the budgies I've had I've never had this happen to any before. Think I'm just going to have to deal with it if it affects her for the worse in the future. Poor wee Pippa!

Oh, bless her. Im sorry but i think it could be a tumor ive had a couple of buds over the years with these. They can go on for some time and not seem bothered by them but ultimately you will know when and if you have to make a decision which would be in her best interest. As long as she is eating and drinking and getting on with things happily let her be. Was it an Avian vet that you saw, did he not take a little biopsy.

Poor wee Pippa, indeed. I think anyone who has had any number of budgies is eventually going to have one who develops a tumour. Whether it is benign or malignant will determine how long Pippa will have. Skysmum has asked some very pertinent questions regarding the vet you saw. If anyone suggests it is worth operating on, get a second opinion, please. Budgies for their sheer lack of size, and small blood supply don't tolerate ops very well. I agree with Skysmum, for the time being let her be; you will know when the time has come and her quality of life is not what it was. Sorry it is not better news.

hi all sad news had to get pippa put to sleep this morning. It was a tumour and it was weeping some horrid brown stuff. Vet couldn't do anything else for her. At least I still have her friend Maxie who is looking a bit lost.
Thanks so very much for everyone's comments. I have really appreciated it.
