I have just been and bought 4 boxes of trill and one pack of vitakraft menu and put some in a plastic container and mixed some special budgie through with it . Dont want to waste the special budgie as I paid £17 .50 for the bag so I think I will just keep putting some in the container with trill and use it up that way

That's a good idea sounds like it's got all the right ingredients, I'm sure your birds won't know the difference

Buying in bulk and then having to store it and be sure it stays fresh; or buying something already mixed, like Trill, and paying through the nose. Ruby and Julie, I would be interested to know how the budgies fare under the new mixes, and if you do any tweaking to your recipe.

Just tweaked a little Hezz, well a lot really, I've cancelled my seed order and gone back to Trill I decided to keep with what I know works, I wasn't sure if I'd got the mix right or if it would store well. I'll have to think of other ways to economise

Don't think you can buy Trill in bulk Julie. Have a look at Haiths web site, I'm going to take Barries advice and mix my own, I hope this is ok, 5 kg White millet, 5 kg Red millet, 5 kg yellow millet, 12.5 kg Canadian canary seed and 2 kg Tonic seed. This comes to £56.50 compared to the same weight in Trill £93.22. A massive saving if anyone is watching pennies as we are at the moment. a super mix Ruby

Thanks Barrie feel better knowing the mix is right, might re-order when Trill has run out. Does anyone know how long seed keeps fresh for if it's kept dry indoors in an airtight container?

That would depend on the individual storage conditions, and how old the seed was when it was bought. So I guess it would vary. Seeds for human consumption are usually okay for 3 to 6 months, if stored properly - airtight, cool, no moisture, light etc.

I put some garlic and ginger powder in the seed containers. I never had bugs issues ever since I have started doing so.
Storing seeds in airtight container for long time will keep the seeds fresh, but not so if it is opened every few days to get the seeds.

Hi Here in the UK There is no VAT to pay on a straight single seed pack. So it works out cheaper to mix your own. Most if not all retail outlets, buy from the main importers. They don't grow their own. so no one seed is any better than another except for the fancy extras you pay for...B.J.
