I bought Munchy a new weeble budgie to replace his broken one. he took to it pretty quickly, so now I just use the old one to give him gentle scratches and to put on things to encourage him to go there, like on a plate of food that I just put out for him. It's got some pieces of apple, tomato and a small amount of lightly toasted fruit loaf. He seems to have taken to the tomato. Or at least he's nibbling at it occasionally. He's just taken a nibble at a piece of the fruit loaf. He also stole a crumb of one of my cheese and onion hula hoops... Luckily I don't think he liked that much XD
Along with the new weeble budgie he has another weeble thing that has an arch with a bell. He loves pecking at the bell. Rather than knocking the weeble about, he prefers lifting the arch part out and throwing it around. It seems to be fun for him, so I won't find a way to secure it. It's not hard to put back together, even if it doesn't stay in for long with him around. there was a little metal rod through the arch with four beads on, he'd started shimmying out the pole and I couldn't get it back in, so I've removed that. I think I'll string the beads on some leather strip when I get it and use those to try and replace the bell. Not quite so shiny but at least I know that they're plastic and won't harm him unless he somehow manages to swallow one.
I've rearranged his rope perches on his play tree. He seems to be enjoying them so far. Also, if I hold one of his toys, he's taken to nibbling my fingers when he's standing on my hand. It doesn't hurt at all, even the ones where he's applying more slightly more pressure, and there's no lunging involved. The hardest nibbles are directed at my nails, but I think that's because they're obviously harder than my skin. He did it quite a bit yesterday after I'd been rubbing his feathers the wrong way with the broken weeble budgie for a long time. He jumped onto my hand, nuzzled the weeble, then stretched up and started preening my face for a while, before nuzzling the weeble again and then started nibbling my fingers.
Edit: I think I just got my rewarding experience of the day: A Munchkin sitting on my hand next to the old weeb-budgie and looking very contented with his eyes closed, and then asking for scratches from the weeble. One very happy and adoring budgie owner here.
And some of his nips to my fingers seem quite hard, but he only looked like he was going to lunge once when I moved my thumb, but when he uses his beak on the areas where a bite would really hurt, like the skin between my thumb and index finger, he barely applies any pressure at all, so I don't think he's trying to hurt me. None of it hurts, that's for sure.
And I've just taken the belly off of the jingly weeble in case that was making him more violent. He's still playing with it and trying to pull the arch out, even if it doesn't jingle anymore. Makes it harder to use to grab his attention but I'm glad toys don't have to have bells for him to enjoy them. I'm going to buy a pack of 100 keyrings so I can use some of those to make jingly noises, though XD
