Ahh ... thats just a few of them there's more to come ;D The aviary birds are a hobby yes, the rheas are part of my rural skills project that I run for young people. I have emus, chickens, turkeys, eagle owl as well as other animals. Not actually a zoo! but feels like it sometimes, keeps me busy !!

That's great I would love to have more types of birds but the weather here and the space are the issues. Looking forward to see the pictures of the other birds

Thank you for your comments. I have a flock of 10 rheas all pure white. The big fella in the breeding season isnt too friendly! but like the rest of them they will feed out of my hand. And I do feel lucky to have enough space to keep my birds.

What beautiful birds! I don't think we have them in New Zealand; they look very exotic. Are they the size of an emu?

Rheas are about a foot smaller than emus and have a totally different personality. I keep emus too, they are lovely birds. I will put some photos on of them soon. I have only had my emus for 2 trs though so no chick photos. The rheas do have stunning beautful blue eyes, I will get a few photos of the fathers eyes too they are lovely blue. All the pure whites have blue eyes. Thank you for your comments.

I looked them up on Wikipedia, and their social life sounded quite intriguing: Rheas are polygamous, with males courting between two and twelve females. After mating, the male builds a nest, in which each female lays her eggs in turn. The nest consists of a simple scrape in the ground, lined with grass and leaves. The male incubates from ten to sixty eggs. The male will utilize a decoy system and place some eggs outside the nest and sacrifice these to predators, so that they won't attempt to get inside the nest. The male may utilize another subordinate male to incubate his eggs, while he finds another harem to start a second nest. The chicks hatch within 36 hours of each other. The females, meanwhile, may move on and mate with other males. While caring for the young, the males will charge at any perceived threat that approach the chicks including female rheas and humans. The young reach full adult size in about six months but do not breed until they reach two years of age.
