The Budgie Project
I’ve had my budgies, (blue) Berry and (green) Woody, for almost six months now and it is has been quite a journey. During that time I have thought tons about them, read a lot and my browsing behaviour shows a strong new bias too. Pretty much everyone who knows me well knows about the boys and I have had many budgie-related conversations with others, some of whom share my excitement and delight and some of whom are probably now avoiding me whenever possible!
As well as spending as much time as possible with them (my home office has been largely abandoned) and enjoying them hugely (I have also had bit of concern over severe moulting – see ‘Lost flight and tail feathers’ in Budgie Health), there have been so many other discoveries and new kinds of fun. For example, I have had the real pleasure of locating and visiting many pet shops in my own town and elsewhere. (I have always loved small independent shops run by people who know and love what they sell – and where pet shops are concerned there is the added bonus of that warm, complex and utterly distinctive smell, not to mention the amazing sounds which greet the visitor.) I have acquired components and made toys (making things is another enthusiasm) and had the fun of seeing the boys enjoy/dismantle/shred or otherwise interact with my creations.
I have thoroughly researched food issues and now about 33% of my small kitchen is devoted to sprouting seeds, growing greens and storing a reasonably comprehensive variety of dry foodstuffs.
The boys started off their life with me in quite a small cage, but they have now got a much bigger and better one, and my living room, which is their wider world, is steadily evolving into what I hope is an optimum human/budgie habitat.
There has been quite a lot of technology brought to bear in all this too. I have taken probably thousands of photos of them, and there is now a little film (all of which I’ll see about sharing at some point). From sheer curiosity about what they get up to when I’m not there, I have at times set up video surveillance and I keep returning to the idea of a webcam so that I can tap into BudgieWorld when I have to be elsewhere (which is too much of the time).
You have probably got the general picture – I am really into my budgies! Having them in my life has made me think about all sorts of interesting things (to me anyway), which I might manage to come back and share – assuming that is okay. This whole forum thing is a new world to me and I would really like to hear what other people's budgies mean to them.
Meanwhile, I am about to see if I can manage to get some pictures up here....
