Im a tad puzzled . Since having the new cage my lot don't want to come out. The doors are open all day but nope they wont budge. The only thing i can think of is that the new cage has two smaller doors as opposed to one large one. Ive tried everything, putting perches near the doors, fruit, veg and millet but they don't want to know. Nothing has changed in the conservatory and they were always very keen to be out , any idea's.

Hi Skysmum, Mine stayed put for about a week after their move to a new cage when they were normally out most of the day everyday. I think their wee budgie brains were too busy getting to grips with their new environment to venture beyond. Hopefully yours will pick up where they left off very soon and then be all excited about coming back to new home too! Birdguhl

Is it because the doors are in a different place to the other cage? They probably just need to settle before they feel confident enought to come out, afterall they need to know their environment first before they venture out to be able to come back....if you know what I mean?!!!

Was wandering about that birdguhl, as you say their little brains seem to take a while to adjust to anything new ;D bless them. Its been a couple of weeks so i shall just keep opening the doors and let them make their own minds up .

Re doors - although the doors on my new cage are in same position as on old cage and they had got in successfully already, mine did some very strange climbing around on sides and back of cage in a very confused looking manner. I watched them all one evening trying to find their way but they ended up not making it and being on top all night. It was hard just watching them get frustrated but not be able to intervene!

I have always made my birds wait in the morning before they come out - it is my excuse to say good morning and give them a kiss on the belly. After that they can come and go as they please. Small doors are a problem - the birds are in a vulnerable position getting through a small door - too easy for a predator to grab them. Will they come out on your hand, Skysmum? I have large doors, but I love it when they hop onto my finger and climb up my arm and out the door, onto my shoulder. Maybe they will feel safer if you are there and help them find their way out. I am only guessing of course.

There was a time when all mine were hand tame but sadly 6 years in the Aviary and there is not a hope, they will however hop onto a spare perch which i use to get them back in. Tried this today and they hop on and as soon as i get them to the door they are off like a shot . Nothing for it but to wait until they feel its ok i guess, i will just carry on leaving the doors open and let them make their own minds up, i just hate seeing them in the cage all day .

I know what you mean about struggling with them being in the cage all the time. Much as I love them wherever they are, when they are inside they are budgies in a cage. When they are out they are BIRDS and it is so delightful to see them behaving as such. Since Berry lost his flight feathers mine are rarely out together and when he is it is nervewracking as Berry is not flying confidently and is having to learn to do shorthaul hops instead. Woody really needs the exercise though as he is very fond of his food and he misses the old days when they were racing each other to their favourite perches and taking it in turns to display their prowess. So I sympathise and I really hope yours are flying free very soon.

Exactly Birdguhl, and i already feel bad for taking them out of the Aviary but i had no choice, the roof has sprung a leak and until it dries in the better weather we cant re- felt it, so for the winter they are in. I have one who has just turned 10 and the others are 7 years old so want to keep them snug now. I also have two non flyers, 10 year old is a french moulter and as he is getting older he isn't recovering well from it and one has a bad wing so they tend to just mooch around and i have to watch they don't get into any difficult situations but the other two are like spitfires so i feel bad for them. As you say i love to see them being BIRDS. Hay ho im sure it will resolve itself, i will keep trying .
