Fresh foods to Offer your Budgie
Budgie-safe Fruits: Apples, bananas, berries (straw-, black-, rasp-), cherries, citrus fruits, figs, grapes, guava, kiwi fruit, mango, melons, pears, stone fruits, There is some controversy over citrus fruits, some sites put them on the not-to list, while I know from the Aussie breeders forum that many add all and any citrus to their aviaries.
Budgie-safe Vegetables: Asian greens (bok choy, pak choy, kang kung etc), beets, broccoli flowerets and leaves, carrots (including tops), bell peppers, celery, peas (with shells), the spinach family (chard, silverbeet, spinach), sweet corn, cooked sweet potato, sprouts, the squash family, radishes
Budgie-safe Plants: Basil, chickweed, clover, dandelion, sorrel, and in fact most fresh herbs are safe for budgies as well as native grasses, as long as they are not harvested from road-sides. The pollutants from vehicles make these grasses unsafe.
Foods to Avoid: Avocados, asparagus, apple seeds, dairy produce, potatoes, lettuce too often, onion, rhubarb.
Extract from Pittwater Animal Hospital, Sydney: Quote: “Dangerous foods - Avocado, rhubarb, chocolate and caffeine are all poisonous. Cabbage will make your budgie sick. Spinach and parsley bind to calcium, reducing its absorption from the gut;” unquote.
Controversial foods: Eggplant, plums, cabbage, green beans, citrus fruits

great post, just the info i needed. now how would i feed these? do you chop them in a dish or feed whole? sorry for the noob questions That's fine. How to serve up? That depends on the budgie(s). Some will take to their fresh food like a duck to water, others will do anything to avoid their greens. If yours is an avid eater, you can cut slabs of anything and put them up in the cage etc on a kebab stick, skewers etc. I use bamboo skewers - they quite often get nibbled on too. You can buy special stainless steel ones especially for birds in petshops. If your bird(s) are on the fussy side there are a few things you can try. Grating and shredding some over their seed. The downside of this is that it will have to be thrown away after a few hours regardless (seed and all) as the food could become contaminated. Grating and shredding over some eggfood, if they will eat that. Grating and shredding some onto a plate and offering it to them - maybe sprinkle some seed through to encourage them to explore. Putting some of your veges, especially the leafy greens, into a shallow dish with some water (whole leaves seem to work best with this method), and the birds can have a bath at the same time. If the birds have progressed from the fussy eater stage but not ready for whole carrots, thin slices cut with a vege peeler are a good way to go. With corn you can slice the kernels off with a knife or cut slices through the whole cob and push onto a skewer. You can also peg up bits of veges to their play gym or tree, make it more natural-looking. You really have to be a bit inventive and try anything that occurs to you, if the birds are a bit fussy. Like veges in front of some millet, or wrapped around millet (leafy greens) if they are millet-heads. Hope this helps. I am sure to have forgotten something, but not sure what!

Erm - I didn't know they could get vegetables I thought perhaps I could try offering it though the cage bars to help with taming. I'm guessing as she's never had veg I have introduce it gradually to avoid upsetting her digestion?

They can make her poos more wet and green, but that is only to be expected. With your 12 year old, Sunnyjo, your problem is more likely to be that she won't know what to do with them, never having encountered them before. So I suggest you offer her a variety of different things, one at a time, and try all the suggestions I have listed. What will work for one bird doesn't necessarily work for the next. And if she rejects it one time don't assume that that is that! It is quite possible that the next time she will greet it like a long lost friend. At your girl's stage of life, it probably isn't too big a deal, whether she takes to fresh food or not.

This is just a guide, a basic list of things I and others have found that their budgies enjoy, and things we are more likely to have in the kitchen. There are tonnes of sites on the internet with great long lists of toxic and non-toxic plants. That wasn't the aim of this thread - but more to give starting pointers for owners to get their birds eating their greens! Glad to be of help, -dors.

I like my parakeet salad, which is mostly kale, with a grated carrot and some frozen corn kernels added.

thanks for this valuable information:) it really helped. I heard they can eat lettuce sometimes - is this true? Anyway, you were a great help While budgies will eat lettuce it doesn't really have any nutritional value for them. It can also upset them and make their poop very watery. There are much better veggies for them to have such as carrots, cucumber, celery and sweetcorn
