I've seen them eat chicken before, but it's only supposed to be in small quantities. Not sure about fish. You have to be careful with protein that they don't have too much. Hardboiled egg is a definitely safe food when you want to provide extra protein, such as during the moult or as a treat.

I'm sure someone with more experience will be able to get back to you about the fish. I'm not a big veg and fruit eater but Munchy is making me improve. Extra protein is mainly only important during the moult, or if you're breeding, and perhaps if they're feeling a little under the weather. It's for feather growth and such. SO even if you don't eat eggs often then once in a while is enough anyway. When I do make an egg for him, I give half one day and half the next. He doesn't eat anywhere near all of it but I'm nervous to keep eggs for too long, plus even the second day he doesn't seem quite so interested. Hezz What do you think about fish?

Have not heard of anyone feeding their birds budgies fish, Ira. As you have mentioned, protein is really only an issue while they are moulting or if breeding. I wonder what @corie, or BudgiesBuddy have to say regarding fish? If eggs are not an option, the next best option is eggfood. And, Ira, remember, they are only looking for a bit of protein, to explain why Munchy isn't too interested the second day. Besides their grass, mine don't even look at veggies two days in a row.

Thanks Hezz I thought it was a strange concept that's why I asked! I'll always question stuff I read elsewhere

Cooked fish can be given, i also remember a old breeder i new that would scale/gut/fillet his fresh catch and nail the remainder to his shed for the birds.
Do i feed it no, would i feed it no , my birds have a complete diet i have no need to feed it.

I know some breeders hang whole cooked chicken in the aviary. And the budgies don't take long in stripping it to bones.
But Corie is right, why give something if you get the same nutrition from other known diets.

Is there a difference in fish and cuttle fish bone. apart from cuttle fish bone being more convenient for hanging on the cage?

Maybe I should have asked about the protein. Is cuttlefish bone given for its protein content as well as the shell being used to keep the beak in trim? Fish is full with protein but without the benefit of the bone portion. Could it be that a budgie could overdose on protein if it was fed fish?

Cuttlebone is given more for the calcium content, rather than keeping their beaks trim. It's very high in calcium as well as containing some other trace elements and minerals. It doesn't cost much, especially when compared to other calcium supplements or sources and it's a natural product without additives. When I had something go wrong with my parathyroid I had to take loads of calcium tablets daily and it cost the earth.

Plus the cuttlefish is a mollusc, not a fish, but that's a bit beside the point

As Stace says, cuttlefish "bone" is given primarily for the calcium content, not protein.

Yes I obviously have put the proverbial foot in the mouth. I wasn't thinking straight at the time.
