They are probably scared of the plate if they are not used to it. Try holding it for them or putting it in the cage. It may take them some time to get used to seeing new, strange things. Start with just one food, say broccoli, and put it in the same place every time and eventually they will go over to investigate and eat it. Then you can try another food, again in the same place, eventually they will get used to the place as being where nice things are put for them.

I have tried them with a sliced tangerine, and some broccoli today and it was a disaster. I put a plate on top of the cage with the food on it and both birds flew to the curtain rail. I got Bert on my finger and walked him over to it, but flew back to the curtains. Am i doing something wrong? are citrus fruits a bad idea? They can be really inexplicably fussy over eating fruit and veggies. You have to keep presenting it to them, sometimes in different ways, until they decide to try some. A lot of us find that eating something yourself gets them interested. If you munch on a piece of carrot or apple, they might want to get in the action. They have an instinctive desire to eat when the flock eats. They also seems to have different things they like, and their preferences depend on the bird. Mine likes carrot, apple, red pepper, cucumber, raw beetroot, and swiss chard. He won't eat oranges, but loves a sip on my orange juice. He'll also eat tomato, which most budgies don't like.
