Hi, My budgie appears to be missing some feathers underneath one of his eyes. It appears to have started a few days ago. At first it looked like something orange underneath the eye but now it's a bit clearer there are some missing feathers there. I've attached a picture. I'm sorry it's not that clear but it should be enough to illustrate the situation. Notice Phillip (the gray one): (Original image size: ge.tt/api/1/files/1EoESbY/0/blob?download)Has anyone encountered something similar? Is there anything I should do? Thanks.

Oh, boy. I've just read a bit about it. I sure hope this is not the case and that it's something that will heal by itself. I do keep feeding my budgies some vegetables on a daily basis (mostly carrot and cucumber peels).
I think I'll have a vet see him, just to be sure.

Shwartz, scaly face isn't something to have a panic about. All you need is some 0.1% ivermectin and give both birds a drop on the back of the neck, directly on to the skin. To me, the blue bird looks like it may have scaly face, but you are talking of the grey, are you not? I see the slightly red area under her(?) eye. It may be the mites giving her a hard time or maybe a little eye irritation that is causing her to rub at that area. The eye itself looks lovely and clear, but maybe a cool black tea or chamomile tea compress may help soothe the area. I don't know how you would go using any of the creams so close to the eye, when the eye itself isn't infected.

I don't know how you would go using any of the creams so close to the eye, when the eye itself isn't infected. Both of them aren't tamed so it's pretty hard to treat them like that. So, I wasn't gonna' try to put any cream near the eye. I haven't seen any major change in the appearance of Susie (the blue budgie) so I'm not worried about her. As for Phillip (the gray budgie), he might have been rubbing his face against the perch a bit more often than before but I haven't associated it with the problem near the eye since I think it he started doind that earlier. Still, it might have bothered him before it was causing some feather loss. Still, I would like it to heal and not just sooth the irritation. It appears slightly swollen now too (just a bit). Do you have any idea what that kind of irritation may be? His behaviour is pretty much the same as before but he might be fooling us to think that. Israel.

scaley face is a little mite that makes your budgies itch!!! But does it cause feather-loss like this? I'm not too sure if he feels an itch around the area any more than he did before.

I know there's some kind of spray to use for budgies but I've never used it as they've never seemed to have a problem. Besides, it might be a problem when it's that close to the eye.

Besides, it might be a problem when it's that close to the eye. get some 0.1% ivermectin.... and make sure it is 0.1% as there are different strengths available... follow the instructions and you budgies will be fine ..... you must treat both budgies .... practise putting 1 spot on a bit of paper as its important not to over dose the budgies as you could kill them ... now dont panick .... its easy to do ... once you have practised and you no how much presher is needed to dispence 1 drop ... then and only then ... put one spot on the back of each budgies neck ... directly on the skin .. not the feathers ... then just leave them and do it again as per instructions .... i hope this helps .... regards mick....

There were too many different suggestions and I was worried so I took him to the vet, eventually. She said it might be a problem with the sinuses, gave him some eye drops and antibiotics. She could tell he probably sneezed a lot (which is true) because of the feathers above the nostrils were dirty. His eye healed.
Unfortunately, he passed away a few days ago. He was about 8 years old and so she also felt some sort of a tumor in his stomach, which might be the cause for this unpleasant turn of events.
Thank you all for your concern.
