Woody was at the vet this morning. I continued to be unhappy with the rate of his breathing and tail bobbing which (I think) has started very recently, although he was otherwise reasonably lively (doing a bit of flying over the last couple of days) and eating normally. I am really glad I took him though as the vet was quite concerned about him. She could hear him putting a lot of effort into breathing and he has evidently lost quite a bit of weight.
As you can imagine I am feeling upset especially re quarantine issue although Luee seems as healthy as ever (and he and Berry are still madly in love and very noisy and lively) so if he is the route by which Woody got ill then it wouldn't have been solved by keeping them apart as he seems to be asymptomatic.
The question I have at the moment is whether it is okay to use Guardian Angel along with Baytril? Any guidance appreciated.

If it were me I'd pick up the phone and ask your avian vet... there shouldn't be any additional charge for requesting advice related to a prescribed medication and it's use. Good luck.

As Learner says, ask the vet. I don't have GA so not sure what's in it. I'd say it would be okay though. When we get prescribed ABs it's only alcohol we're told to avoid.

It is usually used before, or after, as I remember, but the vet should be able to tell you. It is more like a pro-biotic, and the antibiotics will render the GA ineffective.

Guardian Angel is used for sick and stressed birds. They usually get better as it supports the immune system.
If a bird was ill and has used medicines, it should be put on Guardian Angel for a week after the medicine course is over.

Thanks for responses, folks. I will hold off with the GA.
Woody has had four doses of antibiotics now. I am pretty sure he is getting it as he looks so utterly affronted and disgusted opening and closing his beak afterwards. I am told Baytril tastes horrible. He is very difficult to catch and has been practically drawing blood by pecking my hands. So he does have some strength but it must be terrifying for him to be chased down twice a day and droppered like this.
I think he is seeming a bit better. He is certainly quite alert looking, however this could just be because he is totally terrified of me now. He is less fluffed up and I think his breathing looks less laboured. He has also been eating and pooing normal looking droppings - 6 or 7 today - although this is definitely less than usual for him when well. I am putting a clean sheet of paper in every day to see exactly what he is producing. So I am cautiously hopeful.
But, even assuming a total recovery, if it was Luee who passed something on to him whilst remaining well himself does this mean that I shouldn't put him back with Luee and Berry (who is livelier than ever so seems to have escaped this lergy)?

Are you crop feeding the Baytril?

Hi BB - no - am just using a dropper and getting as much as possible of the single drop dose as I can into him.
Oh - another question - would it be a good idea to put Daily Essentials vits and minerals into his water just now?

Hi I think it would be better once the medicines are over.

Thank you BB - I appreciate the guidance during my first journey with a sick bird.
My petshop owning friend described the crop feeding technique to me - sounded like kit for an expert!
My heart is beating fast and my hands are shaking with nerves (as well as the pecking) after even the whole dropper procedure!

Sorry - I keep thinking of more things - they normally have oyster grit available - should this be available for Woody at this time?

I always prefer to place a sick bird isolated in warm place and with access to simple seeds and water only.

Ok - thanks - he has a infrared heat bulb keeping him toasty with the small cage 3/4 covered in another room and just plain stuff to eat and drink. I wanted him to have just the radio on very quietly (as this is familiar to him) but yesterday and this morning there have been gas mains people digging up the street directly below the window so the peace and quiet has been more tricky to arrange. Thankfully they seem to have stopped and I can hear a more distant hole being dug!
