So, Penny is the budgie I have had the longest. Her cere has always been a very pale white-blue, so I figured she must be a girl! The only thing is, she's just started trying to mate with one of my other females. First I thought she was just trying to assert her dominance, but she's actually mounting her and . . . well, you get the picture! Is my Penny a lesbian, or a boy? Very confused!

Apparently hens can do this gender-bender thingy just as much as the boys. So you are probably right, she is a hen. Marleen had a very interesting thread in which she had pretty much the same thing happening. Check this thread out: budgerigarsforum.proboards.com/thread/4908/girl-love

The "lesbian" thing in my experience is rare. In my bird's case, since the ladies were split up across two aviaries the bird in question mated with a cock and is sitting on her second clutch of eggs. There is no sign of her being lesbian now and I think this behaviour was based on "need" after two cocks unfortunately died and they became dependent on one another.
In Donna's case, since the bird is a pied, I think she may be a he as the cere does not always show their colour. It's like an albino or lutino. In albino / lutino's case they are most likely girls but with the pieds there is no way of telling until they start their mating season.

Has her/his beak ever gone browny coloured like a female in breeding condition? I do think it look male.

Pretty bird, Donna. Looks rather male in that first photo.

I'm still not sure, though, though I agree that she looks kind of male in those photos, that was just after we got her and she was really young. (Denial? lol). Her cere is much paler now. I'll get another picture!

Gah, I still don't know! I think I maybe am in severe denial because I want her to be a girl. Here she is today.

Oh, Lordy, Donna! I'm not guessing. I have my own enigma to try and sort out! I might have to do the same and take more of Misty.
