Hello! I am a newcomer here, and can't find a propper place for my postig. Since Junuary this year I have got a male budgie. We took him from a pet-shop where he lived with tens other in the same cage... The budgie is still young, he is chanhing his feathers for the first time now and his head is becoming white. He is very quiet for this creature, but too much suspicious. He jumped on my hand only once - 5 days after we took him home and came to the sofa several times and was definitely interested in my husband's activity with his computer, but then he hurt his leg while flying and we had to catch him in order to cure - now I think he hasn't forgiven us yet as he never comes to us, he flies away every time we approach and only jumps onto my palm if I put some seeds on it holding my hand near the cage. The cage is always open so he feels free to move around, but he never leaves the sitting-room. He is very attentive and tries to mock our laugh and intonation, but still hasn't said a word yet, only mumbling. He rarely tweets but mostly mumbles especially when TV is on or when we are talking too loudly. During his first days at home he was usually interested by aquarium tank and tried "to catch" fish. Now it seems he is afraid of us and everything that is around. Although he plays his toys ouyside his cage - several bells, a tiny mirrow and a toy-cockerel who he regularly fights with! I wanted to ask if someone knows wheather such a behaviour normal or I have no chances to tame him...

Hi - welcome! What is your budgie's name? Can you put up a picture? Sounds like he is doing well if he'll feed off your hand. As far as I know teaching a bird to talk is a long and intensive project - it doesn't happen spontaneously. It also sounds as if he is lively and active but if he is going to become more tame you have to work at it gradually building his confidence and trust. You'll find a lot of useful info on the forum under the various topics e.g. budgie taming Good luck and looking forward to hearing more about how you get on.

I wanted to ask if someone knows wheather such a behaviour normal or I have no chances to tame him... Your budgie, Yasha, sounds fine. He's just become a little wary of you since you had to catch him regularly to give him his medicine. This will be just a minor setback. It is quite common when new birds get sick and need to be treated. Just keep on rebuilding the trust between you. He just needs a bit more time to feel okay with you again. Talking to him all the time and feeding him food by hand is a really good way to build that bond. Most of us find that millet sprays are really good for this. Most budgies really like them. Save the millet for these training/trust building sessions only. Also, they like lots of background noise. This is why he's noisier when you've got the tv on or are talking loudly. In the wild they feel comfort from the noise of their flock. Quiet means there may be danger or a predator nearby. You have to be patient and persistent in taming these little birds. Sometimes it feels like you are getting nowhere, but they always come around. Some take only a short time, others a bit longer. (Your English is pretty good too. No need to apologise. )

Hi and welcome. I agree with Moogie, time and patience It can take months for them to trust you, but it is worth the wait and effort. And your English is just perfect!

Thanks to everyone! We're still trying, but so far no progress. But now he started answering to my calling him - whenever I come home from work and call him, something like: "Bird! Where's my dear bird? Yasha? What are you doing over there?" and so on, he starts tweeting back))) But my hand without seeds is still an enemy!))) well, I going to wait...
