I havent started breeding my lot yet but I have had one cock who seemed to have paired with a hen but lately another cock has been after her and wont leave her alone. I have 5 hens and 3 cocks and none of the other hens are attracting the same attention ,yet all look the same to being in breeding condition. I am thinking should i put the pair in a breeding cage but which cock should I use ? The one thats been following her and grooming her for a while or the one thats been chasing her the last couple of weeks.

Hi Julie I think you should put them in a breeding cage because colony breeding causes a lot of issues. As both are interested in her, I would go with the ne that you think would be the most helpful while breeding. I would go with the cock that lhas been grooming her and has been paired up with her longer. Unless your after a specific colour and want to use the other cock. Nicola

Breeding condition and pairing up has a lot to do with the diet. Separate your cocks and hens in different cages and feed them various breeding diets for a month. This will break any existing bonds between them and bring them into full breeding condition. After a month, you can pair them up the way you want and put them in the breeding cages.

We are having the same problem Julie but I don't want our birds to breed anymore. The pair that bred last year (Sydney and Freddie) are still always together but now Eddie has started paying Sydney a lot of attention and Freddie doesn't like it It was so funny the other day and I know I shouldn't have laughed but Sydney and Freddie were mating, Sydney with her head bobbed down and Eddie on the perch next to them also with his head down chatting away and looking up at Sydney, Freddie flew off Syd and chased Eddie away and went back to Syd to carry on were he left off....this happened 3 times till in the end Syd got fed up and flew away. They all seemed OK after this, no bad feelings , just picturing the scene, bless them.

The shed is to small to do that as half the shed is taken up with indoor aviary. only got room for 2 breeding cages in there. As regards breeding food what should they be having ?Ihave been feeding egg food for about 8wks and they have a mixture of different fresh foods few time a week

Breeding foods and supplements are many which help to bring budgies into breeding condition.

I would say both Julie Give them some before you put them in the breeding cage so they can build up their strength that they will need while incubating and raising the chicks and to help prevent egg binding. Give them some in the breeding cage as well to produce strong eggs/chicks and again to prevent egg binding. Don't forget to offer cuttlebone as well Nicola
