Sadly, my parents told me that Maya passed away this morning. She wasn't ill but had been looking tired the last few days. Last night she was sleeping side-by-side with Pebbles, as she usually does, but was leaning on him heavily. I have to say that I'm thankful she passed away quite suddenly. It's heartbreaking when you have to watch them suffer and then make the decision on whether or not to give them a lethal injection.
I got Maya and Ruby from Barry around 5 years ago. I already had the two boys, Pebbles and Cookie. Maya was the youngest of my four budgies, but soon became the leader of the flock! The boys were wary of her at first, but a beautiful romance developed between her and Pebbles. They were joined at the hip, literally! Ruby tried to befriend her, but she was having none of it. Once Ruby passed away, Maya became the centre of attention, with the boys (who are the best of friends) scrapping over her. Even my cockatiel, Misty, was smitten by her. He longed for her to preen him, just once! Everyone adored her Her song was beautiful and delicate, when the boys were quiet enough to hear it!. She was my only bird who enjoyed a bath, daily, and the first to brave a shower. She was also a typically naughty hen; chewing wallpaper and seed dishes, and throwing them to the floor. She didn't like sunflower seeds in her food (they were Misty's) and would toss them out!
Maya did well considering she had breathing difficulties (ticking tail) and couldn't fly very well. I've no doubts that she had a happy life with the rest of the flock; especially Pebbles, her true love
Baby Maya
The hydrophile
The real culprit...(and Misty, giving the "I told you it wasn't me" look)
Swingers...
Lean on me...
Smoochin'
True Love.
Cute as can be.
