I started giving them this eggfood couple of months back. And they used to have it properly. But for last 1 week, they are not touching the carrot, beetroot etc. vegetables. Instead they are having only the egg. How can I have them have the vegetables as well? Also, I gave them corn kernels, but they dint have any of it.

I will give this a go tonight. Will grate or cut up raw broccoli not boiled. I also bought an eggy stick from a big chain of pet shop and birdy would not touch it. I'm hardly surprised as it had the texture and consistency of concrete.

Hi, niazi. Do you mean that your budgies' feathers are not shiny and bright? And are you trying to breed them? If they are not in the best health, it is best not to try to breed them now but to get them into peak condition first. A lot of that comes from a good diet - fresh dust-free seed, fresh vegetables every day or two and eggs or egg-food, whichever they will eat. Marianne's recipe at the beginning is very good for them, for an over-all diet. If you have a nest box in their cage, please take it out until they are in better health.

Tiny Tyler is moulting bless him, he's trying to get a preen but only at Bonnie's convenience he's scratching himself on anything he can find, so today I boiled an egg (nearly too long the pan was almost dry!) mashed it well up and have put it in the platform feeder. So far they've both had a go at nibbling the paper I use to stop Bonnie from playing with the feeder and throwing all the food on the floor! I do hope they (or especially little Tyler) manages to get some egg inside him. So question, it's fresh, so how long do I keep it in there, will it be ok for 24 hours? I've got another 'helping' in the fridge but how long should I keep that? Thanks

I'd keep it in their cage for 3 hours.
It'll keep in the fridge for 24 hours.

Crikey these budgies are expensive thanks Marianne I'll take it out before too long then and try again tomorrow. I've sent for some egg & grass sticks just in case this didn't work.

You could also try some of the dry commercial eggfood and leave it in their cage as it doesn't go off.

Yay.....I saw Tyler having some egg this morning, bless his tiny little heart and he seems to have got his mojo back I'm so pleased! It's the first budgie I've had that has actually eaten mashed egg! So proud of him lol.....now then.....I think I may have given too much, I halved an egg yesterday and put half in the fridge for today but this is probably too much in one go? How much can you recommend I put out at a time please.

You need to remember that a budgie can only eat the amount of about the size of their heads, and that is without the feathers. You need to offer enough for him to notice it, but there is no point putting out more than you think he might eat. There is no hard and fast rule; common sense will tell you how much. Half an egg is more than enough for only two budgies, and now Tyler knows what it is and is enjoying it, try a quarter and see what happens. He might entice Bonnie into wanting what he is eating with a bit of luck.

Thanks Hezz, I'm not very good at posting here and on another website and trying to 'work' all at the same time! They haven't had egg today, I'm expecting a delivery of egg & grass sticks in the post so will see how they get on with them but will definitely try mashed egg again now I know my Tiny Tyler enjoys it

Sounds great and yummy I might have some myself is once a week enough? (Whether moulting or not?) Given the propensity for our pet budgies to become over-weight in middle age, just like their hoomans , I would only give when needed - when moulting or perhaps a bit under the weather. Some people give egg often, and that is fine. It is a personal choice, there are no hard and fast rules.

Sounds great and yummy I might have some myself is once a week enough? (Whether moulting or not?) You do know that the hard boiled egg yolk is the best (protein) to give your budgie. When I do mine I just put a tiny bit of mashed up white together with the yolk. As Hezz says, they won't eat loads of it, having said that my lot really tuck in if I've mixed it with a small quantity of sweetcorn!
