I am no breeder, certainly no expert, but it doesn't look good to me.

It may sound strange, but almost every chick I have ever had, at some point showed the signs of splayed legs when it was not so. What I mean to say that you can't tell just from one picture. They may have this position for a while but then they sit OK the next moment. Watch your chick closely to see if he has this position all the time.
If in a little bit of doubt, don't risk it and use the precautions.

I suppose the question to be asked is whether this is the chick's normal stance, and/or can it bring that leg in under itself. This that right, BB??? A bit like taking a photo of a bird having a fluffed-up moment and being perfectly healthy, but the photo will suggest a sick bird ........ I can understand the confusion.

If I lift the chick up and sit it back down the leg shoots out like that again. I have done the sponge method yesterday so here's hoping, that chick is the smallest in a nest of 4 so maybe squashed a wee bit?.

How old is the chick, geordiemols? But good for getting the leg into rehab, as it were. Better safe than sorry, even if it does end up not being splayed leg ....... if not done in those first vital days, the legs are stuck this way forever.

From memory a couple of weeks Hezz, would need to go out and check the breeding card to be 100%.

Ouch! I understand the best results are when gotten to within the first 10 days ........ but the sooner the better! Good luck, anyway.

I have one in the aviary who`s both legs were badly splayed and I didn't put him in the sponge splint till he was about 2- 3 weeks old .I kept him in the splint for just over a fortnight and it worked a treat and he is one happy little bird flying around as if nothing had been wrong with him . Here he is , now named SpongeBob his legs are even better since this photo was taken

Good job, Georgiemois! What a cute little bird! Hope his legs straighten out. You've done so much to help him.
