Thanks Hezz. Today I've had Brodie in the bathroom for several sessions & so far, so good! I thought initially we'd have a few days him just getting used to this strange room before learning about coming out but this evening he was comfortable enough to be sitting on my hand in the doorway nibbling millet & feeling around the edges of the door & just looking. He wasn't fully out of his cage but most of him was & he was fine, intrigued but relaxed doing lots of winking & even sitting on 1 foot on my hand. I feel more more in control doing it this way. Hopefully we won't be in there for too long though, it does feel odd taking the budgie into the loo for training! 
But I find it less stressful for everyone (ie Brodie and you), not chasing him about all the time, and then you have both forgotten where you were up to.
