Great info starlingqueen Very helpful If its alright, I will just add that when trying fruit and veggies for the first time, if they are in a container make sure they are grated rather than chunks because if anyone else's naughty, young females are like my Daisy, they seem to find more entertainment in throwing the chunk of carrot/celery (etc) over the side of the bowl and onto the ground- repeatedly- rather than eating it which results in the food becoming a toy. Grating or very thinning sliced it always best, especially for first timers Nicola

Some budgies don't take to small pieces though, Nic. Thinly sliced is good. But another point to make there as well, is that some aren't interested in their veggies in a bowl. Except for corn mine are not interested in veggies served up in a bowl - they want theirs on a skewer and pegged to the side of the cage. So it really is a matter of trying all ways of presenting the fresh food and finding out your own birds' preferences. Whether it be grated, thin slices, chunks, bowls of food, skewered, pegged ........ the list is almost endless .......... fussy little *#@*s.

That may indeed be the way forward with Joey. Offer a whole carrot instead of small pieces or shredded. That's what seemed to work with the celery.

If I hold things up to Brodie he'll tuck in enthusiastically (carrot seems to be veg of choice at the mo) but when I pop it into a clip he tends to just ignore it even if seconds earlier he was enjoying his feast, any tips on dealing with this? I fear he may just be slipping into pampered pet mode preferring hand feeding! I only hand feed him occasionally or when I'm training him & I always show him what I've done with it when I put it in the clip but on the days when I don't hold it up to him at all he just doesn't eat it.
