I have read that many of you feed sweet corn to your budgies, the question I have is is the Jolly Green Giant tinned stuff OK? I realize that many of our international friends won't know what that is maybe. The reason I ask is because of the salt content.

i bought sainsburys own as it is only sweetcorn and water
if you have the salt, i would say just rinse it thoroughly and then should be ok, although would some salt get in? maybe hold off on that one and get one unsalted, or boil a corn on the cob?

Some people used tinned some use corn on the cob or even mini cobs as well But if you do go for the tinned stuff just make sure it is in water only as ffiscool has said

Thank you Samwiseg and Ffiscool, but I would like to know if the brand I mentioned has dangerous amounts of salt in it. It is a well known brand in these parts and I have a tin in my cupboard which will stay there unless I have a reason to open it. I use to love it on a prawn omelette, but now I have an intolerance to the sweet corn. So if someone could tell me whether it is safe to give some to Joey or not please?

I'm afraid I can't help too much with the salt contents of that brand but with my budgies I buy bags of frozen sweetcorn and defrost a bit at a time but mainly I buy the fresh corn on the cobs from tescos, you get 4 in a pack and I stick them on skewers and hang them in the aviary. You can also buy frozen corn cobs from Tesco and Iceland.

Usually it states whether the sweetcorn is in salt water... I'll show you what we get: I wouldn't use this one as it is the original and in salt: Hope that helps you

Ho Ho Ho says the green giant. Thank you Samwiseg. I didn't know there was a salt free variety. I feel a bit stupid now.

I guarantee you Joey will go mad for sweet corn. For some reason budgies LOVE it! Buy the tins that say its in water only, or as the others mentioned give him a little mini cob

Bailey squeezes out the insides and the skin manages to be everywhere around the floor and walls

Sounds familiar! I put enough out for all 5, but they still want each others corn and run up and steal it out each others beaks! It's so funny watching them all run about stealing each others sweet corn, but your right, it gets everywhere!

OP, If you are after something to dish up to Joey where you aren't wasting a whole lot, how about the frozen packs of carrot, peas and corn? ? You can use them yourself if you want (after you've picked out all the corn for Joey ...... not sure how the carrot would be received, but the peas and corn should be okay. I know others on the forum use frozen veggies so they are able to feed them all year round, not only through the growing season.

Now that makes great sense Hezz, thank you. I'll look out round the supermarket when I go shopping. I can't say I have seen ready frozen, could I perhaps do it myself? Chop the ingredients and the freeze them?

As for these things, it seems that they are forever changing and so called improving on these foods aren't they? And 9 times out of 10 I end up picking the wrong one because the print is so small! So perhaps I might do the frozen idea too? Definitely worth considering
