Thank you so much for the info. I have already got lots of of toys for outside his cage and loads on the outside. The main problem is that he gets quite distressed when he tries to fly and cannot. He is getting more and more protective of his cage and at times a bit aggressive. When he is out of his cage he tries to fly, lands like a stone and then runs to either my husbands legs or mine to crawl up us to sit on our shoulders. It was a little funny, today because before my husband could do anything he had run up his trouser leg. Yesterday I was doing jobs in the house and he chased after me just so he could jump onto my slipper. The problem is I am afraid of standing on him. I just hope it is not French Moult and it will improve. Thank you again

Oh by the way, still not sure if it is Bertie or Betty Looks like Betty to me... but it's hard to see from those pictures. Perhaps you could get a clear picture of his/her cere up? I hope he/she's feathers grow back and it's not French moult.

Will he not stay sitting on your shoulder while you go about your business? Blue used to sit on my shoulder for so long at one time I would forget he was there - I walked outside one day because I forgot he was there. Hot-footed it back inside when I woke up to where I (and he) was!!! Otherwise standing on him will be a very real concern.

Hi Jennifer, I have a 3 month old who has has what we believe is French molt but the vet says there is no safe way to test for it so we haven't. It affected mine so that her/his flight feathers and most tail feathers fell out. The vet gave us vitamin drops given twice a day to help with feather devoplement so get to the vet and get some vitamins or powdered ones for soft food, maybe the egg recipe that is a sticky here.
I talked to a lot of people who's birds have had it and some recover to various degrees, the best chance of recover seeming to be at the first true molt.
Our bird has since grown in the feathers it lost and lost most of them again, but kept a few extras this time. He/She can fly enough to get to perches now and the next round of feathers is coming in, they will prbably fall out again but with vits and protein hoping to keep a little more each time.
I think you wrote in another thread that you didn't find any dropped feathers but if you do and it is french molt what I see is poorly formed feathers, quills that get thin and deformed and filled with dried blood in spots.

Hi, found a couple of feathers from his other wing over the weekend and they look at they have been snapped off not just dropped out. He seems to be getting more and more aggressive towards me. If he comes to me he is fine, if I go to him he chunners like mad and bites me so much. I now wonder if his feathers have anything to do with stress, say he is biting at them. Why I don't know. He has lots of toys, plenty of attention etc etc. He plays with his toys. eats most of the veg I give him, and all told seems quite happy. I could manage with the no flying bit but not happy about the aggression he actually fell of his perch yesterday trying to get at me to bite. It was funny but really it wasn't

Just to be safe I'd try giving some wet foods to up the water intake if you don't already. I usually have to offer the same food a few times before mine start to eat it but now they love broccoli sprouts, carrots, and cucumbers.
Also a big glass bowl makes an awesome bath for them and they take some sips before jumping in.

Jennifer, I know what you mean about them being defensive in their cage. When I got Puck he had all but his outside flight feather clipped, then he started his first moult unfortunately lost ine of them first and got quite aggressive. I think it was largely because the flight of fight or flight was missing - I posted some more about it on the taming forum which maybe helpful to you
I hope he gets better but if not I'm confident he can still live a very happy life

I spoke with our vet last evening who is very knowledgable about budgies I have now found out. She says she doubts it is French Moult but that he is nibbling them off. She asked was he moulting, I said not that I can tell because there are no fluffy feathers in his cage. She asked if he had a bath. I told her he will go no where near one. She suggested me spraying him every day to encourage him to preen. I told her he hates it but I sprayed him last night and he would go no where near me afterwards and really bite me. He just sat there on his perch looking sorry for himself. She said if there was no change in a week she would see him.
As far as the drinking water is concerned. I do give him veg (he adores baby corn) so will see what happens on that front. And thank you Matt I shall look on the taming forum.
Thanks to all

I'm sorry to hear about his feather problems Jennifer. I bet it's frustrating wanting to fly but not being very good at it. That might be why he's a little aggressive at the moment. Persevere with him, give him plenty of love and plenty to do and I'm sure he will adjust soon. At least it sounds like you have a good vet to advise you. All the best
