So sorry to hear about Mumbo Heres a couple of thoughts on some illness prevention measures you can take in the aviary. Perhaps its worth asking the vet about treatment for canker (trichomoniasis). Its a protozoan parasite which burrows into the crop and eventually makes the crop swollen so the bird can't eat or drink properly. It might explain why the water was bubbling back up when he drank. Its a pretty common ailment in outdoor budgies as it may be passed on by the facaes of wild birds. A preventative medicine can be given via the drinking water once or twice a year to aviary birds. Its also a good idea to change water drinkers to hamster bottles to prevent contamination from bird to bird. Another ailment which causes fluffed-upness and regurgitation is heavy metal poisoning. It can come on very suddenly in a healthy bird if they have been chewing on any non stainless steel wire, chains or other metal fittings in the cage or aviary. If they have only injested small amounts then symptoms are lesser and can go unnoticed for a long time, but if they have injested a lot at once it can cause sudden death.

It is all so sad especially if metal poisoning..
Would you think that most cages and toys are ok metal wise? Bailey loves chewing the bars of the cage and the chains that hook the toys up

Alot of toys you can buy for birds are unsafe Its hard to tell if something is stainless steel or galv metal when it is new, On the whole unless it is labelled stainless steel, then it is not. I replace all chains and fittings with thick undyed leather cords or stainless steel fittings which you can buy from here www.northernparrots.com/parrot-toy-making-parts-dept106_pg1/Most cages are safe especially the ones coated with powder baked paint. Some plain wire cages can get rusty when they age so important to keep an eye open for this.

So sorry for you all, and that we were not able to help. Rest in peace wee Mumbo. I would advise that you get all or some of the other birds checked for the more obvious diseases. You don't want this to happen with the rest. This may seem like an odd question, but did Mumbo have a fishy smell about him when he was ill? Hello Hezz , we didn't notice a smell, why would this of been ?. mumbo got sick really quick through the day , he is now in pets corner in our garden , girls are settling down now ,but our eldest wants to know why she is always with the birds so hard to explain an not be able to do anything ,we only set up in June this yr . Aviary has been thoroughly cleaned we caught all the other birds put them in a cage while we did this pots ,perches, houses, chains all cleaned with a cleaner we got from pet store that claims to disinfect most birdy illnesses ,any remaining seed, iodine blocks, cuttle fish was thrown away and started fresh. Will be contacting the vet later for a chat at the moment the others seem happy an healthy lets hope it stays that way. The reason I asked is that the bubbling and very quick down-hill for poor Mumbo made me think Trichomonas, which Nat has already mentioned. Trich gives off a fishy smell. Heavy metal poisoning was in the back of my mind as well. Another thought: you say a new aviary ...... is the wire galvanised, and has it been scrubbed down with a vinegar solution? The zinc coating is toxic to the birds until it has been scrubbed down with vinegar ..... and this should be repeated, I think, around every six-twelve months. Not sure exactly. As nat mentioned with chains, all toys need to be checked as well, even if you have purchased stainless steel bells etc, they still need to be checked in case it is of poor quality. Stainless steel is really the only safe metal for budgies. Have a look through this: budgerigarsforum.proboards.com/thread/2204/budgie-safe-materials-toys-etc

Sour crop can cause fluid to collect in the crop. It's caused by a blockage. The bird drowns in it's own digestive juices. I had a chicken with it once. We had to tip her upside down to drain the fluid and massage her crop to clear the blockage. If anyone does this, please only tip the bird for short periods as they can't breath while the fluid is draining.
