F10 Disinfectant – what is it?
Budgie keeping has changed so much over the years even down to how we clean our cages, perches and accessories.
A lot of people are raising the question about what to clean their cages with and how to clean with F10SC. But what is it? Perhaps it may be best to start by explaining what a disinfectant is and does.
Disinfection is defined as the destruction of all pathogenic organisms or organisms capable of giving rise to infection. Disinfectant or germicide is a substance which destroys harmful microbes (not usually spores) and thus prevents the transmission of disease.
Antiseptic is a substance which destroys or inhibits the growth of microorganisms. A disinfectant in low concentrations can act as an antiseptic. Antiseptics can be safely applied on living tissues.
Detergent is a cleaning agent which acts by lowering the surface tension e.g. soap.
So F10SC is a Veterinary Disinfectant and is used for effective and safe general disinfection of all hard surfaces (such as tables, floors and cages), and for animal housekeeping procedures (such as the cleaning of food and water bowls and bedding). F10SC can be sprayed on and left to disinfect after cleaning.
But there are many types of F10, which is right for me?
Everyone has a different set up for their birds either aviary or domestic. There are many forms of F10 and would personally recommend the neat solution for aviaries as you are dealing on a larger scale.
Me? I have domestic birds (and I’m lazy) and personally I like to use the ready to use trigger spray.
To clean your cage and accessories you will first have to clean off poo, feathers etc. with warm water and a damp cloth. Then spray on or wipe F10 solution onto perch, cage , toys, feeders and drinkers and allow to dry.
This is perfectly safe to do and will not harm your budgies.
F10 Wipes are available but remember they will not be as higher concentrate as the solution method.
How to dilute F10SC:
General disinfection of hard surfaces: dilute 1:500.
High level disinfection: dilute 1:250
For the most resistant viruses (eg parvovirus) (aka Weils disease): dilute 1: 125.
How long will 200ml of F10SC disinfectant last?
If you use 2L of a workable solution per day for High Level Disinfection, you will have enough F10SC for 25 days.
The Science Bit:
Rapid kill times – less than 30 secs for gram positive bacteria, 60 secs for gram negative bacteria, Canine Parvovirus 20 mins.
It has been successfully tested against avian influenza (bird flu) viruses at a concentration of 1:500 in 10 mins.
Non-corrosive, non-toxic, non-tainting, non-irritating, aldehyde-free.
Biodegradable & ecologically friendly.
I have tried to include as much as I can without it becoming a novel but should you require further information on F10SC Biocare please see here
