Hi everyone! I have some exciting news! The cockatiel that we rescued from Rawlings Park last Sunday has come good and can now fly so it looks like we will be officially keeping him and adding him to the crew!
But can budgies and cockatiels live together? 9 budgies vs 1 cockatiel? If it helps, my buds are never aggressive to any newcomers and invite them in with open arms if you know what I mean. But I'm a bit worried with the fact that cockatiels can do a lot more damage than budgies can. One person said 9/10 times cockatiels will pick on budgies feet and that's why they can't live together. What does everyone think?
Starlingqueen- I could be wrong, but I think you rescued 2 cockatiels a while ago. Did you put them in your aviary with your budgies? How did it go?

I've never kept cockatiels, but when I had turquoisines they lived happily and peacefully with the budgies until the start of the breeding season. The parrots became quite territorial / aggressive in spite of a large aviary and I had to split them up. I won't mix parrots / parakeets now for this reason, although I have other more placid birds in the same aviary.

I don't have Cockatiels, but I have read many posts about how cockatiels go excellently with budgies.

There are a few members who have cockatiels and budgies together inside ........ I know this is a different setup to an aviary, but my gut feeling is that a lone cockatiel will be fine and love having the budgies' company. Is this one at all tame? And if so, it may well have very strong bonds with its previous owner, in which case the kindest thing to do is try to find them. If it is a wild bird and it has recovered, would it not be better to release it? ? Sorry, I know, I always play devil's advocate but .......... sometimes our own wishes take over and we forget to look at what is best for the animal itself.

Don't stress Hezz, I can see what your coming from He's not tame but I don't think he's wild either because he is happy to have us around him, just not inside the cage. And also because he was found heading in the direction of starvation/dehydration when we found him in the wild. I have never seen a wild cockatiel around our area either. We have tried to hunt down his previous owners but no one has contacted us about him and we were getting to the stage where we either have to find him a permanent home or give him to a pet shop which I'm not really comfortable with Nicola

So glad you considering keeping him if you can't find his owner. I have a teil who is now living with 2 budgies and all is fine, when I was considering first putting a budgie in with her some internet searches said not to do so as the teil has stronger bite and budgies can be quite annoying to them at times. My teil threatens a lot but is a softy and a pushover really so budgies rule the rust here. Females tend to be more timid so even though they typically bite or hiss more towards us when faced with a confrontation from buds they more likely to give in. That's not saying males can't be placed with buds I just thing it is safer if the budgies are the alpha birds in the flock. You could try introducing them slowly, I first just allowed them to fly out of cage together before keeping them in a cage together, you could also just put them in cage together at day time only to begin with so you can monitor behavior and see what happens in any confrontations before leaving them full time. Also so glad to hear he can fly again such good news

Thanks again Chicklett I am pretty sure he's a boy as he has quite bright orange cheek feathers. What do you think? Any guesses at the age? Nicola

He, if he is a he, is a pretty boy. You have obviously done a great job getting him back to health. Don't give him to a pet shop, please. I would agree that he is an escapee rather than a wild bird; he is a lovely mutation whatever it is. As far as I am aware they are rather like budgies in that the mutations are man-made and not at all common in the wild. I wish you well in your adventures together.

Thanks Hezz After a couple of days introducing Rocco, or Juliet if a girl, to the flock, I have finally taken the plunge and let him loose in the aviary. And things couldn't have gone better! No arguments or beak opening- I think he was happy to finally fly and have bird friends again. He was even eating right next to Romeo, hence where he got his girl name. Everything went perfect and I am so happy that it did! Nicola

He or she looks just like my angel, does your teil sing or just shreek, females tend to mainly just shreek, also if he over 8 months old the feathers on the tail and under the wings are a way to tell, female adults will have some speckled feathers and in males will be all grey, think under 8 months old all cockateils can have speckled feathers though

He/she doesn't really sing, there is just the occasional shreek/tweet sound. We don't know how old he/she is, but he doesn't look old or very young. My guess was around a year or so. His/her tail feathers are heavily speckled and are very wide/thick. Does this mean that Rocco is a girl?

Sounds like you have a girl to me then. Just like my angel. I didn't know they act so different when I had angel, was such a shock to hear a cockateil singing so loudly in pet shop when angel quiet unless she calling out for something or is excited by sounds on tv she recognises. Thought angel must have something wrong then found out it just gender differences. Sounds like your budgie introductions are going good so far too

From that it sounds like Rocco is a girl, and so happy everything went well in the aviary. It is good that you have school hols right now as you will be able to monitor the interaction more, make sure there is still harmony in the aviary.
