Has anyone had experience of their budgie getting an X-Ray done? They have to be put under anaesthetic to get it done and like anyone or any animal, there is always a risk. Im just wondering if any forum members have had one done to their bud and how it affected the little one. Were they ok, managed fine etc?

Did they give any idea of what it could be?

My buds has had to have numerous x-rays, but he never gets put under anaesthetic. I think someone holds him with his wings out.

She was talking of a possible break to hip bone and that he had a bit of bruising on his upper foot / leg, but they're not entirely sure what's wrong. She said he definitely looked very unwell and advised an X-ray to find out what's wrong. Which is why I've asked about them. As I didn't realise they got knocked out to get them done. They're so small and wriggly and she said they need to be flat and relaxed so need anaesthetic but yet again, I am worrying myself due to obvious risks involved.

I'm sorry - this is so worrying for you. Poor little Lemonade, but you have done the right thing. I have had Woody anaesthetised and x-rayed there. He was very ill with liver disease and an infection at the time (and as it turned out a broken leg) but he was fine. Who did you see? When are they going to do it?

It's sounds awful but, they must know what they are doing and can treat him for the right thing. I hope you get some sleep tonight.

I didn't even remember her name birdghul I was too caught up in worrying and I forgot. She was young, tall and blonde and very professional. She wasn't happy to X-ray him today due to his condition. She wants to build his strength first and get him stronger and calmer and get painkillers in him. If he is stronger tomorrow maybe then. He has a wee red sore at the joint of his good foot where he has been leaning.

Poor wee budgie one and poor you.
I totally empathise with you - on several occasions I've come out of there having taken in about 10% of what I was told. (Sounds like Emma, Genna or Jo - or someone I don't know - I think all of vets have met all of mine!)
So you have a return trip soon? I'll be thinking of you. Keep us posted and as FF said, hope you both get some sleep tonight, and Lemonade is okay for next step.

Yes, will keep you posted. They're ringing me tomorrow 9ish. If all is ok I still think he will be there for a few days.

Ok. So they've kept him in. Well, he'll get the best of attention, I'm sure. Hugs to you both.

lemonade, if the vet has a digital x-ray machine he doesn't need to be anaesthetized, just held very, very still, but most will have the older style x-ray machines where the vet will anaesthetize the bird for the x-rays. If it makes you feel better I have had two birds x-rayed three times without any side affects and one of these birds was really quite sick when this was done. It was how Bluey's tumour, enlarged liver and kidneys were diagnosed. With Lemonade being a generally healthy bird apart from his foot, he is one of the best candidates for flying through the anaesthetic, no harm done. I know, as with us, there is always some risk, and the more experienced the vets and nurses are at this the better. I am sure he is in good hands. Hugs to you both.

I don't have good news. Lemonade is dying. I feel like I have been punched in the stomach. They found a huge mass inside and surgery would only offer a 10, at best 20% chance of survival. I don't know what to do
