FRANKIE UPDATE #2! Today something new happened!! So far, every time i fed her, i would put my hand far enough so that she would be comfortable but close enough to the perch so that she could step on it. However, the last few days, I would put my hand a bit further from the perch and as she would lift her leg to step on it, I would subtly bring it closer. Once she has climbed on the hand once, getting back on it isn't a problem and takes no time. Today, I made an attempt to bring my hand to her. What happened made me laugh so hard!! She got upset that i dared going to her, but yet wanted to eat so instead of doing the usual and running away, she actually bit me a few times ahaha! She was alternating a bite and a climb attempt! So cute!! I let her bite me to show her nothing happens when she does that. (I read to do that somewhere), I would however say "no" firmly... so she chirped back!!! I feel there's progress with this stubborn little adult... I'm really proud of her, the feeding has been going on for less than a week!! Again, i'm looking forward to reading your comments and opinions! Ps: Thank you for the explanations on how to post pics!!

Greetings, mbatts. I've been struggling with something very similar here in Manhattan. Goldie found her way to my window in the middle of this past summer. She could almost be said to have conned her way into the apartment. Like Frankie, Goldie eases up on her fears in the food realm. She'll walk onto my open palm to finish off some snack material, and she perched on a finger, any number of times, to eat millet. Without the food, it's a quite different story - that of no, no, no - I don't want you to touch me... get it away from me. I just keep to our routine, giving her no reason not to trust me, as much I can do that. She's now about 6 or 7 months old, so by comparison, you've hurdled a year and a half all by yourself. That means the trust is there. I've observed that birds adapt slowly and regularly. Put a new item in the cage, and the bird will ignore it for a time until, suddenly, he/she embraces it. The picture you've posted says it all. And girls are tough, more aggressive, sometimes far more defensive (also incredibly personable and endearing).

Many years ago, when i was a child, I received my first budgie as a present. It was a male and he was the best pet I have ever had. He passed away 15 years ago now and I still miss him sometimes. His taming was easy and painless... We hit it off almost right away and he loved me as much as I loved him. Frankie is another story. I've had her for two years without really bothering trying to break her ways... I can see her little character (even before the taming sessions she used to make us understand when she wasn't happy about something) and can totally tell she's a female!! She is now about four years old so I know I have a lot of work ahead. I've been trying to avoid her connecting my hand to food only and to do so, after I feed her, I put my empty hand face down on the perch she's standing on and at a distance where she is comfortable. I just leave it there for a few minutes, then try to get closer and if I see she becomes nervous, I back off and leave my hand there a little longer. Maybe try with Goldie? She's still young.. I'm sure she'll get to love you once she sees how much fun she could have with you Females are just... females... picky ahaha!

It sounds like we're both doing our best to build this into a fine partnership, in both countries. To answer the had question - yes, I've placed my hand on the perch and done all kinds of de-sensitizing things. What happened, about six weeks ago, is that she started biting - hard - even when my hand was approaching with something good. I've been informed this is a potential known adolescent phase and not necessarily permanent. It did kind of derail the process, though. Even so, if I'm careful, we can agree to be civil around feeding time. (Now, I see she's following this text as it grows across the screen. It must look like a crawling insect when the cursor moves.) Thanks for your story. This is the only bird I can recall having, though there is picture of me as a small child gazing at the pair my parents had for a while, in the Tropics. I think I was more taken with the cage.

Yes Frankie started biting me too the other day when i would bring my hand to her instead of letting her come to me. I sucked it up and didn't move, so she eventually stopped for that one feeding. I just put millet spray in her cage for the first time last night so she could taste it. She hated the sight of it!!! This morning she is pecking at it but i'm not sure if she thinks it's a toy or if she's actually eating it yet.... i'm observing her at the moment. She makes me laugh ahaha

As they'll say to you here - give everything time. Weeks, months if necessary. She may end up adoring the millet (likely), but even that can be an acquired taste. Oddly enough, the first day I had Goldie, she did nothing but devour cracked corn. Now she won't touch the stuff. You may find some real action in buying one of those little tubs-with-mirror and putting a good, wide leaf of romaine lettuce in with the water. Place that at cage-bottom, preferably not in harm's way of where she typically hangs out, above. The occasional fine spray of clean water can also be an elixir.

Frankie Update:
I have been very busy this week and couldn't give Frankie as much attention as I did last week. We are still at the same stage where she eats in my hand when she's hungry but still is afraid of it if I go in the cage without food.
Her new thing now is that she tries to get to her food bowl, which is sitting on a coffee table next to her cage, on her own. For the first time, she ventured to the edge of her cage door (which i always leave open because it's easier for me to feed her that way) and actually flew out a few times. Now, because she has never really flown in my apartment, she doesn't know where to go or where to perch herself and often ends up in weird spots. I always go get her and, when she's confused and lost and scared, she hops on my finger with no problem knowing that I will bring her back to familiar grounds.
Here is my question: I am going back to work next week. I am a flight attendant therefore I am gone a few days a week so I won't be home to spend a lot of time with her, trying to tame her. Will my efforts on the days I will be home be useless or will it just take some more time since i'm not around as much when I work?

I would say that it will just take more time and she may be a bit more hesitant, but not sure she would forget what you had done.
funny isn't it, that they can use your hand to guide them 'home' and it is safe then.. but the rest of the time, it is clearly NOT the same hand and is completely unknown territory!
