He was on the perch when I woke up this morning so I'm pleased about that - he is obviously making use of the perch that goes down to the floor. I didn't actually hear him fall off his perch during the night though, but he may have. I'm just keeping an eye on him now - I haven't decided yet what to do He had a wee drink of medicated water when he woke and is now having a sleep. It is still really early in the morning though.

It seems that Smokey isn't ready to go yet. You and he will know when the time is right. Hugs to you both.

He passed away early this morning after spending the evening watching me at my laptop. He had lots of stands on my hand and bed during the day, and I just knew he would pass away during the night so I told him how much I loved him and that he would be able to see his friend Lucki the budgie again soon (who passed away two years ago). He looks very peaceful now on the floor of his cage. I'm glad he went now before I move house in a weeks time - he can be put beside Lucki in the back yard beside the Karori bird sanctuary.

Very, very sad. But relief that Smokey is no longer suffering and is with his Lucki.

Rest in Peace, sweet handsome Smokey. Keep his cute face and happy song close to your heart, and he will be with you forever. He and Lucki are together again, talking about the good times they had with you. I am so sorry for your loss.

Thank you everyone for all your kind words. I don't regret not getting him put down. It might be a different story with another budgie, but with Smokey he was clearly feeling comfortable with my company and enjoyed sitting on my hand. I was home all weekend and on Monday so was there for him all the time (he lives in my room in my flat - as do I) and so he had plenty of company and normality when he started to get unsteady on his feet. He still managed to climb all over me on Monday afternoon and sit on my bed with me although I could tell he wasn't feeling too perky. I think taking him to the vets would have been distressing for him, especially being held to be given an injection. After a year on antibiotics he does not like being held at all. I was glad he died in his cage on the fluffy towel I put on the floor surrounded by his familiar toys. He looked like he had simply gone to sleep on the floor and not woken up again.

May we all pass on like Smokey... in our own home, on a soft bed, comforted by someone who loves us as much as you love Smokey. Rest in Peace.

Yes, definitely. Smokey was in the right place. I will never get over leaving mine, years ago at the vet. I knew he would die and he should have been with me at home. But I got talked out of it.
