Day 1
Today I started to set FinFin in training. It's his first day of 15 minutes intensive training. I want to teach him the command "UP" as the step up command. At first he did not understand, but with a lot of affinity and patience he soon understood that he would be rewarded with me saying "Good boy FinFin, you are such a god boy" this I did in a very silly sounding cute voice, more like Micky Mouse but he looked at me with a look that was so cute, that I thought instead of giving him a food treat it may work for him, since he does not take millet when I try to teach him something, he is more concentrated on whats going on. So he does not take the food treat So I repeated that a few times and then suddenly more or less he willingly stepped up with both feet and stayed a few seconds, as long he was sitting on my finger, I rewarded him with my sweet voice and he was listening very interested and so he stayed, until I put him down on my own. I did not wait until he got down, instead I put him down, which once let to him stepping back up right after putting him down. Good job baby bird!
But I will repeat this now during the day and who knows, maybe he will understand the command in total in just a matter of a few days. Or maybe he will even surprise me with a lot less time understanding, what he needs to do!
BTW. FinFin still returns on his own to the cage. He lands on my desk, on the floor, back up the cage and returns inside. He seems to enjoy it though. But yet he does not want to stay outside a long time. His cage door is now open the whole time, when I am in the room myself, but he really doesn't want to come outside anymore, after he was out for like 2 minutes he he he
So these are my FinFin Diaries for today, hopefully tomorrow I will have a new progress! I hope you enjoy reading it. Please leave your comments and tell me what you think, FinFin and I appreciate every comment you guys leave!

I think you have fitted right in to being a budgie mummy and finfin is having a wail of a time.

It's all in the timing and the duration of efforts. I like this diary and hope it reveal more rapid progress, as you've already experienced. I'm reverting to some clicker training with Goldie. She's capable of surprising me with hidden talents and deft acuity. Poor thing has pinnies growing out of her head right now, making her one mean morning person. By evening she calms down and even lets me "pet" her a bit with the chop stick. I caught her closing her eyes as recent crop feathers were stroked. Aha. Bust of luck on this. FinFin is perfect.

FinFin is indeed a model budgie. He just seems perfect. If budgie master classes were possible you'd have a very long queue on the forum...

Day 3
Yes it is day 3. Sadly yesterday we had so much to do and my work kept me busy. FinFin is happy that I am just there, even if I am working on the computer. But today I had some more time and let him out of the cage again. He really likes it, that I open the cage around 11:00 AM. He sits first on the open gate and chatters. Now his chattering became actually more talkative. He does not really chirp. It's more like a mumbling, I think he tries to form words or something like that, it sounds very cute!
Today again I sat in front of his cage with my hand inside. He really doesn't care anymore. Except when I come with some new food, like yesterday I brought him some roman lettuce leaf and put it inside his water bowl. He was afraid of it! But he nibbled the first time a bit on a piece of apple out of my hand. He also does not seem to be interested in any food that is pressed between his cage bars. He would just let it be and it would rot, if I wouldn't remove it after a few hours... I really don't know how to feed him veggies or fruits, if he doesn't take them. What he eats is smashed egg shells. I mix them in his seed on top and it seems he eats a few of them, while searching for seeds. Maybe I should add little pieces of fruit or veggie inside his seed dish on top of the seeds???
Today he sat on my finger for a few more seconds and it seems he understand it a bit better now, what I want from him, when I put my finger on his belly Good boy FinFin!!
What I also saw today were a few little pinnies on his cheek pads. yep seems like he comes into his first molt now? Or do they get pinnies out of molt also?
One thing worries me a little bit, he still is not in the least interested in any of his toys... Not the interconnecting rings, not the bells, not the ball and he never visits his play gym just out of curiosity. When he comes out, his routine is to land on my desk, stay 1 second, fly to the floor stay a few seconds and back to the cage and jump inside. He is not very adventurous I have to say. hehehe Maybe it was a mistake to put the toys inside and then him when I got him? Maybe he would have more interest in the toys, if I put them inside the cage, after he was settled in?
Right now he is chattering again to the scream of a crow that is sitting outside xD lol That's it for today, I hope I can write a little bit more about progress tomorrow or the next couple of days!

Sometimes they take a while to get interested in their toys. You also need to wait and see what type of toys they prefer. Different budgies like different things sometimes.

There are some budgies that just don't play. I know of at least one. The trouble is that budgies do not read the manual on how to be a budgie, they make it up as they go along. I think that is what makes them so special and individual. It sounds like you have a real character in Fin Fin.

Day 5
Day 5 is here. Yesterday was again a very short day. We went out with friends to a concert in a beautiful church in Pasadena! What an amazing experience. They lighted candles all around the church, everyone held one in the end! They played music from Bach, one of my husbands favorites!
Regarding FinFin's progress I can tell you he becomes a clown each day that passes. Now he starts playing with my hand. But in a very strange way. Every time I try to approach him, he moves around and jumps down to his water dish takes a sip and jumps over to his food dish and eats a few seeds. As soon he finishes he jumps back to the perch and I try to repeat. BUT what do you think happens then? Exactly... He does the same thing. Jumps down to his water dish, takes a sip, over to the food dish eats a few seeds and jumps back to the branch LOL I don't know what he thinks, but this way I will not be able to teach him to step up etc. Because he always jumps down to his food and water dishes. He does not try to avoid my hand, the pattern is too much of the same. As soon he sees hand coming to his belly, down water, food and up again What a clown...
I also realize, that he does not come out at all today. He sits on his perch and chatters and makes a few times this mad budgie screaming noise he he he The cage door BTW. is open as long I am there to have an eye on him. But he really doesn't care. Yesterday it was a different story. I came home from shopping and as soon I opened the cage door and sat down he flew out of his cage landed on my hand for like half a second and back to the cage and inside xD And there he stayed until it was bed time. He is not an adventurer that for sure.

Having limited experience with one bird, I nonetheless feel that FinFin is performing for you, with the water dish and seed. Goldie does something similar at times - going for toys to play with in front of me. She was perched in the open door today, and I thought I'd try something - leaving her there while I went down to a coffee shop for a late lunch. Sure enough, she was still perched in the entrance to the cage when I returned - waiting for life to begin again. When she and I greeted, it was followed by her retreat into the cage for some overdue playing and eating. Again - I had to be a witness, and that satisfied her. I suspect FinFin needs to show off for you.

tanja Yes - we have birds with a similar penchant. Only Goldie is truly skittish about the finger, unless there's a feeding involved - something I think you've mentioned. While she was sitting in the entrance of the cage, looking adorable , I thought to address her with "the finger". Duly, she began to make an escape, putting a foot on the adjacent bars. I withdrew, and she seemed to know that we could co-exist this way - my understanding "not yet". Nice graphics, by the way. Your specialty?

Oh she is so cute and just reminds me of this, I took these photos just a few seconds ago!It really seems that FinFin and Goldie have a lot in common He was just outside the cage, landing on my mouse, flying back to the cage and then to the floor. The clipped wings make him very slow, so once I was holding my hand in front of him and he landed on my arm, because he was so slow. Hopefully the wings will grow back soon, so he can be free to fly like he should. But at least he is already semi tame, so that should be fine
I love to create graphics and did this since I was 15. It's not my job but I can create quite a lot of graphics and I also paint with the mouse on my computer.

Day 6
Today I had a good progress with FinFin's hand training. He finally seems to understand the step up now. He nearly did it 90% of the time. As soon I put my finger in front of his belly and touch him a little bit, he stepped up right after it. The last time a few seconds ago was the best progress of all. He stepped up stayed and lifted his little foot and started chatting sitting on my finger I see that as a big progress, because he never would do that.
OMG as I write this he came out of cage, first wanted to aim on my desk but was too slow and landed on the computer instead. then again to the floor and up to the cage, but he was too slow so I hold my hand under him and he landed on it and jumped from there inside his cage again. He does not seem to be scared afterwards, in fact he is chatting now from inside the cage *laugh*
well slowly he will learn how far he can fly for the moment with his clipped wings. He just is not fast enough to see how long distance he need to fly in order to land where he actually wants to land. Because the landing is kind of weird, seems he has problems with landing xD But after all, I had such a good progress today, amazing. He really shows his character and personality now, each day a bit more so cute to see that!

Wonderful - on the step-up training. You have a true member of the household in the making - someone who wants to be involved with what you're up to. Your graphical ability is wonderful. I'm a graphic artist too and always happy to see people being creative, imaginative. FinFin is the perfect, lovable subject. You can see the eagerness to please on his face as he stands at the opening of the cage. As said, wonderful.
