I was also amazed with this set up, great job. Hope everything goes well. Would love to see the babies too. Birds are beautiful, they look like my Emerald.

They look like true wild budgies Just an update. Its been exactly 2 weeks since they started mating. I still see them mating every day. But, I saw them going in to the nest just once and never again. Both are happy.. mating... singing... jack feeding jill etc... Jill looks little bloated compared to earlier... is there anything else I can provide them? I'm not seriously worried about Jill not laying eggs as of now and I remember you mentioning that it may take even a month or longer... but yes I'm worried about them not even going in to the nest.... :-( Read more: budgerigarsforum.proboards.com/thread/7577/first-time-breeding?page=2&scrollTo=106838#ixzz2onlOsIUG

What most breeders do is, to remove the breeding birds from flight/aviary and feed them breeding diets for one month.
Then pair them up and put them in breeding cages and continue with breeding diets.
If they don't start laying in one month, breeders try other partners.
How's your nest box like?
Maybe they don't like it.

Nest is a clay pot which is widely used in India.
Just to encourage them to enter the nest, today morning, I put spinach leaves in the nest, jill did enter the nest in search of the spinach, spent 5-10 min eating those and came out... never back in to it again.. :-(

Try to find a small wooden nest box. This one is not natural. I know it is used in that part of the world, but it works in colony breeding setups.

Hi, Wooden Nest box has worked and I can see Jill often visiting the box just to make sure it throws out all the wooden shavings that I put in.. As I read in other threads, I have been patiently adding the wooden shavings every time she throws them out. They are mating few times a day. Jack has been busy wooing her and feeding her often. Jill is busy chewing anything she finds around.
Its been almost 4 weeks since they started mating and no sign of eggs yet. But still, I would want them to be alone whole of this season as I can see love in the air between them... Rather than pairing her with other male, I want her to be with Jack as both seem to be happier. If they make family, its fine, else they both would be happy with each other..
Any thoughts ?

I knew the wooden nest box would work.
Give them a week or two. And if they still don't lay, separate them and try again after some time, at least a month.
I have done all these experiments. Some pairs mated regularly and kept me waiting but never laid in over three months.

have got a good and a bad news.... I just saw an egg being laid on the floor (though nest box was available). So, I moved the egg carefully in to the nest box. Within couple of minutes, Jill went in to box and started kicking the egg and forcefully it broke the egg. She brought the egg back on the floor (held with her beak) and started eating the egg..... I could see yellowish fluid coming out from the egg...
