Not all budgies like to be preened by humans. Even the tamest bird may not. I think I could count on one hand the number of times Blue allowed me to give him a scratch.

I got one feather tickled on him.. before he realised that is is NOT what I am allowed to do, and flew off, lol
he does put his head down a lot, and knows i will nuzzle with the end of my nose.. and lately his head it to one side when on my finger, and then I am allowed to kiss the side of his head.. funny bud

Really Hezz? I never would have expected that. ffiscool I found that I could nuzzle Munchy's feathers with my nose long before he would let me do it with my fingers. Only downfall is that you have to hold your breath

Only downfall is that you have to hold your breath Not expected what, Ira? That Bluey wouldn't let himself be scratched? That not all budgies do like to be touched?? Here is my line-up: Bluey - maybe half a dozen times, max. Fluoro - Never (but only had him about three months) Smudge - NEVER! In four years That finger is definitely up to no good! Sparky - Never Misty - Occasionally - usually when she has pinnies ...... she loved a good preen from Fluoro, but Smudge does not preen .......... only herself. Mango - Two, possibly three times ..... until she found her inner hen. Very, very occasionally I am allowed to touch her beak. Spyro - been with me the shortest time of all, and is already way in front of any of the others. Since the first scratch, he has allowed me to, I think, every day that I have had time. Sometimes on a work day they don't get individual time. I found it funny that you say you have to hold your breath ......... I have found that mine mostly quite like getting small puffs, gentle blows into their cheek feathers .... except for Smudge, of course! And if I blow gently onto their beak quite often they will nibble my lip as if trying to work out how it is happening.......... it is probably hard (impossible?) for a budgie to blow.

I was just surprised because Bluey always sounded so tame and I've seen people on here give their budgies scritchies a lot.
Munchy doesn't like water falling on him much, or puffs of air. But mostly I have to hold my breath because otherwise I get a cough, especially when he's dusty from pinnie-wax.

Bluey was the quietest you could imagine, and I think if I had had a bit more budgie-sense when we first got him things might have been different. By the time I was aware that this was a possibility he was set into his ways and we just hadn't gone there ..... on occasions he would let me, but mostly he very politely let me know "no thank you." I had to laugh at your coughing - nothing more sure to ruin the moment than a rouge cough, unless it was a rouge sneeze!

I know what you mean. There are so many things I would have done differently if I had had the knowledge and experience that I have now. Munchy is quite polite about informing me when he doesn't want to be touched, too. He'll let me touch him for a few seconds, but his feathers won't puff up and he doesn't tilt his head. Then he very slightly moves to the side as if to say 'Okay, you've had what you want. That's enough now.' And with that I stop touching him, although I might rub his beak once more and ask for a kiss. He's normally obliging enough with that. Oh dear! Fortunately my coughing normally comes a little later. I have to keep an eye on him and as soon as all his feathers puff up for the body shake I have to lean away so it doesn't go in my eyes and such I currently have a cough, though, leftover from a cold I had last weekend. That doesn't seem to bother him at all.

Hezz how are Mango and Spyro progressing with handling? I'm catching Munchy every morning (except Saturday because I'm not here). He's normally fine with it, except the occasional escape attempt. Not really sure how to progress further though. He was a bit grumpy today as I couldn't let him out until 3pm. I wanted to catch him again so that I could open his side door without him seeing (video pending) and it took awhile. So I'm not his favourite person right now... He has since sat on my palm whilst I held a ball on it, has let me give him a scratch and has winked and ground his beak with my hand next to him, so I think I'm forgiven. I should spend more time making my hands a good thing.

Hi Ira. Spyro is a dream. He is better even than Sparky, I think. Gives me the run around occasionally, not often, but has a real thing about sitting on my shoulder ...... apparently shoulders are not to be trusted! Missy Mango is getting better slowly, but not good yet. But we will get there. I had Spyro and Smudge with me yesterday for a time away from the others. I will be doing this more too, as it worked really well. Smudge is really quiet (and fat, and lazy) so doesn't flit off all over the place on a whim, and Spryo's definitely very taken with Smudge, so what she does is good in his eyes. He actually landed on the upper part of my arm and moved up to my shoulder because Smudge was sitting on my shoulder. That lasted quite some time even though Smudge had a good go at knocking him off! Sharing a shoulder apparently is not allowed either. But with her sitting on my hand, Spyro was happy to as well, and a scratching did work its way in there, too. He so does love a good scratch. So funny ..... Mango is having a stand-off with Smudge - two little birds both up on their tippy toes to get as tall as possible. I think Mango feels it is Smudge's turn to be chased, and Smudge is not cooperating. Munchy will forgive, maybe not forget ...... but he has to let you know that he knows.
