starlingqueen, skysmum, libra and a few other members have asked some questions about different budgie sizes, as well as pairing and breeding English/show/exhibition budgies (bigger size) with wild/pet/normal type budgies (smaller size). I have been breeding them for a while now and I promised to make a thread about it. So here is some information about it. English, show or exhibition budgies (three names of the same type) are the biggest budgies out there. They are a lot bigger than the wild type budgies. They are bred by show breeders to enter them in competitions. They get their three names as they were initially bred by English breeders, and also because they are entered in shows and exhibitions. Wild type, normal or pet budgies (three names of the same type) are the same small size budgies which are found in the wild Australia. Many hobby breeders as well as small back yard commercial breeders breed these budgies for selling as pets. Most of this type have been so mass produced that we can't even get a decent size nowadays. These above are the first two types. The third type is the medium sized budgies. When a show budgie is bred with a pet type budgie, the offspring get the characteristics of both parents, hence the medium size which is bigger than the wild type and smaller than the show type, better feather quality than the wild type and lesser feather quality than the show type, and so on.

This is one of my show pairs. Their chick at this age is almost the size of a full grown normal budgie.

This is a medium size chick. Compare her size and feather quality to her father in the middle of the picture. .

Budgie on the left was bred from a normal pair and budgie on the right was bred from a mix pair.

All these chicks have roughly the same age. The two on the right were bred from a mix pair, whereas the two on the left were bred from a normal pair.

Thank you BB, that is very interesting and educational. I had no idea there were so many different sizes, never mind feather quality. One question I have now, among many that are entering my head, is the character of a budgie affected by the breeding?

Sure is OP , show budgies are bred to be very calm so they can be judged, your bird can be disqualified or marked down for not presenting itself(jumping all around the cage trying to escape).
