Now that makes my eyes water. I suppose it could be a dangerous situation.

Well, I feel for her more when she has to stand on a higher perch or hang from cage wires to feed her chicks, because when they are fully feathered, they are bigger than the mum. And it is not possible for her to regurgitate food in their beaks from the same level. It's very funny to watch Are the eggs the same size BB? I would worry they would be too big for her to pass. Now that is something I hadn't thought of!

Are the eggs the same size BB? I would worry they would be too big for her to pass. Now that is something I hadn't thought of! The reason I thought of it is because I keep chickens and they sometimes have trouble laying. It's generally when they are young and haven't got the "rhythm" sorted out. Like when we first start having periods, we aren't regular. Well with chickens they can have very big eggs that are usually double yolks, or shell less eggs and can't lay them so I have to give them a warm bath to relax them. It pops out eventually or the egg breaks inside and you have the worry of the egg not all coming out. They can also get egg peritonitis, where the egg tears the lining of the tube (can't remember the correct name) and infiltrates the cavity of the chicken. This means there can be a build up of eggs inside the chicken then, as you can imagine, can cause problems and eventually, if not treated, death.

Totally understandable and a very relevant question. Interested in what BB has to say, although it would seem that there isn't a problem, as I am sure he would have mentioned that it is better to have big hen/small cock, if this were the case ...........

I think we all know that the pet hens lay small eggs, and show hens lay big eggs. A pet hen paired to show cock lays almost the same size eggs, as she would when paired to a pet cock. Similarly, a show hen paired to pet cock lays the same size egg, as she would when paired to show cock. I don't think it's about the egg size, it's what the cock puts in the egg.

Thanks again BB. That is interesting. I never doubted you, just my curious mind working over time. Always good to know these things. You may have known something that future breeders would need to know.

And, you are right. Whatever we all share here is worth the time and effort we put in, if it is used for the birds' benefit

But this line did it for me!!!

But this line did it for me!!! Made me smile too Hezz. Thinking about it, it's not the same as say dogs. If you tried to breed a male Irish wolf hound with a female Yorkshire Terrier there would be size issues when giving birth. But with birds the Hen determines the size of egg she lays and all the growing is done outside the body/egg unlike in mammals where the growth takes place inside the female. in the case of the chickens it's a glitch in the hens cycle that produces 2 embryos in one egg, meaning the egg has to be bigger to accommodate the double yolks.
