My budgie is about 9 years old, hes had perfect health his entire life. He recently just molted again which he seems to do very frequently now. When he does molt he sleeps a lot more than usual but I'm guessing that's just because of his age and its more stressful for him, so I'm not too worried about that. What I am worried about is that after this last molt his beautiful bright green feathers are going blue. He is now spotted with bits of blue over his chest, belly and back. It is not the whole feather, just the tip has turned blue. I've tried researching on the internet but the only thing I could find is that it may be some kind of illness. Other than being really sleepy when molting he seems perfectly happy and healthy. If anyone can help it would be much appreciated. Thanks P.s. off topic here, if anyone wants a laugh look up disco the parakeet on YouTube, awesome budgie that has a lot to say.

Hi and welcome to forum Sounds like nothing to worry about here. But a few picture would confirm this.

I understand you are worried about your bird, but to me those feathers are quite beautiful. I am able to offer no advice, but find your photos fascinating.

Welcome to the forum, alicem!
Agree with Hezz - that does look beautiful but can't shed any light on why, sorry. Can you give us a picture of his front as well?

agree, sorry I can't help.. but how beautiful.. I wonder in the budgie world, if it is like us as we get older, grey appears, so maybe the blue is his base colour as it were and when younger the green was more evident

That is very strange - I've never heard of such a thing happening before. His feather condition however looks very good. I've had very long lived green budgies before (12 years) but never have I seen a colur change. Has anything in his diet changed? What about other behaviour?

Agree with tinker - for a budgie to be at 9 years and have that sort of good feather condition I wouldn't have thought it was a problem just a mutation thing. Would love to see a full pic tho please

I do know that any change in feather colour can be caused by a nutritional imbalance. i would take him to a vet to get his bloods done and see if there is anything wrong.

Hi everyone, thanks for your replies Couple shots of the front of his body, sorry not great photos. It is only a faint blue on his front which is why i showed his back in the first photos where it is much more prominent. He has a very varied diet, he is free to fly around the house all day and he picks at the scraps on the kitchen bench all the time. He eats almost anything, like a dog. Meats, vegetables, fruit, his favourite is mashed potato. He always has a supply of a normal budgie seed mix and shell grit. So perhaps it is something he has eaten that has done this? He has been acting completely normal... I will be interested to see what happens with his next molt. Maybe he will become more blue?

Is he helpfully lying on his back for that photo? What a wee sweetie he is with his little feet clasped together. It sounds as if he has a great life with you.

I think it's just a genetics thing. I would need bigger and clearer pictures and your permission to use the pictures to find out more about it. You can email the pictures to budgerigarsforum@gmail.com
