Sod that.
We'll be giving budgies hair cuts next as it keeps away dandruff.
I've never washed my seeds and never had an ill budgie.

The folk who wrote the article were based in the northern end of Namibia, Africa - real third world country. I doubt they had access to the quality of seed you get in Britian, Thomas!

Everyone has his or her choice, but it is very good info nonetheless.
The quality of seed we get here is not good enough to feed the budgies. So it has to be treated in some way.

Hello I have worked in the seed & animal feed industry on & off when work was a bit slack. So I have to agree with Barrie. I wrote a piece on seed some time ago but I had to edit out some of the things on the grounds of, best not to know. Needless to say I too always washed all my seed. To dry it. I got several wooden tomato boxes & knocked out the bottoms. I borrowed some net curtains from her in doors & nailed it over the bottom of the boxes to make big sieves. Then just spread on a thin layer of washed seed & leave to drain & dry. In the winter overnight in the airing cupboard. It doesn't have to be bone dry unless your storing it. Wash, dry, & use is less hassle. The illusion of nice shiny dust free seed is created by giving the seed a spray of oil before packing. Yours B.J.

I have never come across washing millet sprays. How dry they should be - the same they are when we get it? I can oven dry the seeds, but could anyone please guide about the temperature and/or duration. I can do that per millet spray provided to them, one at a time..
Sorry for a naive query (have to be spoon fed for anything related to the kitchen) π

Sorry for a naive query (have to be spoon fed for anything related to the kitchen) π This thread isn't really relevant to the majority of budgie owners; the people who wrote the article were living in Namibia. The seed that they were able to procure was most likely of very poor quality. If you have never had need to wash your seed or millet sprays before, why start now? You don't need to blindly follow someone else's procedures simply because there is something that they feel they want to do. If your millet is clean and free of mould, don't wash it. In fact by washing, you are potentially leaving your millet more prone to growing mould as it would need to be perfectly dry before being stored. The best place to store your sprays is in the freezer. Seed doesn't actually freeze, but most mould will be killed.
