Cookie (aka Chook) died last week, peacefully in his cage. He was the first of my flock and quite a shy bird. After a couple of weeks we realised he was very bored when we went to work every day, so we got Pebbles to keep him company. At first, he was reluctant to make friends but, within hours, Pebbles had persuaded him. Cookie was a little older and taught Pebbles how to sing. They sounded identical and were inseperable!
A few months later, we got the girls. Pebbles and Maya (Maybles) paired up quickly but, it took Cookie and Ruby (Cooby) a little longer. Cookie wasn’t the best lover. He had no patience for preening and got way too excited, leaving Ruby somewhat frustrated!
Cookie was the wimp of my flock! He was contantly watching his back for human hands. He was the first to scarper if you went near them and would scream like a girl when he was startled! He liked a very brief shower and was the most handsome of my birds after a good moult. His tail, in particular, was beautifully sleek and long.
I had always worried in case Cookie was the last to survive as he seemed the least likely to cope. However, he amazed me and just got on with it. He did still have Misty (the 'tiel), however.
Cookie will always have a little place in my heart, as the first of my flock. I can't believe I'll never see him again He will be missed by all of us. Hopefully he is with the rest of the flock now, eating millet in the sunshine.
Baby Cookie, with a missing tail!
Some things are worth the risk....
Best friends
Nibbling on broccoli
...and carefully trying to share some with the wife, Ruby (she was boss!)
Date night for the boys...
Why am I not surprised that Cookie is pink?!
Enjoying the sunshine and showing off his lovely, long tail
