I've been asking this question all over, just to make sure I get this right My budgies are for the most part mixed, most the size of an exhibition bird, some smaller, and some tiny like the wild type (though I still have hope these tiny young hens will grow a bit but we will see). This means, when breeding two mixes, I don't know how big the chicks will be, I might have some very robust birds along with smaller ones in the same nest from the same parents. I also believe I cannot buy my rings from a club as my birds are not exhibition quality so........I have found this website: www.avianid.co.uk/indexThey recommended a size M for budgies on their sizing page, but there is also a search where you type in your birds species and it then tells you the size you need and shows you what rings you can buy in that size, when I use this it says L-M for budgies. When I contacted the site about it I got this reply: Thanks for your enquiry. The size for Budgies used to be size L (4.08mm) internal but it has been changed by COM & World Budgie Organisation to size M (4.34mm) Internal, this is because Budgies have increased in size generally. As you can see from the measurements there is not a lot of difference in size. If you are in any doubt then maybe go for the bigger size?? We are always selling the size M rings without any complaints, although the choice is yours. Many thanks & Kind Regards Helen Langer My concern is the safety, my Linnie has a size M ring, and it does seem a tad big for some of my budgies although it wouldn't come off, and I wouldn't be breeding my really tiny budgies anyway, but would extra space cause safety problems? would the L be too snug? Maybe I need to get Linnie side by side with a budgie and see if I can tell visually once Linnies ring is next to a budgie leg! or perhaps I need to start measuring budgie legs Thoughts? Thank you

This might help, my Linnie has an M sized ring, here are some comparisons.... Mixed budgie (exhibition/wild type mixes) at 8.5 weeks old next to linnies leg ring. Compared to an exhibition bird, my largest budgie: Linnies leg ring compared to one of my smallest budgies legs: I think Marlow (my biggest boy) would get away with it, but I have no huge hens to pair him to so chicks from him would likely be smaller, the others I'm thinking the M is way too big and might get stuck on their foot or snagged, but I don't want to buy the smaller size to find out it cuts off circulation in the leg as the bird grows, who would have thought buying rings would be such a hassle!

My birds don't have rings. They are Canadian pet shop birds. Sorry. Your pictures are cute though. Tiny budgie feet.

Hehe yeah, I thought posting the comparisons would be worth it just for the cuteness I hate people feet, but cute zygodactyl budgie and linnie feet are awesome so tiny and cute! These rings are giving me a headache already though LOL Edit: Ok some more info that will probably help more than the pictures haha, the website states size L (in aluminium) is 4.2mm and M is 4.3 mm, it used to be ring size for budgies was 4-4.2, so with L being a 4.2 anyway, I think I have my answer, L, but just in case I'm also going to invest in some ring cutters and double check with the vet about removing rings if there is a situation where it can't be done by me (say if it causes swelling), but I think I can get away with a nice fit on even my biggest chicks with an L looking at the size difference to M, it's not that much of a difference, at all O.o but M might be just that tinsy bit too big. www.avianid.co.uk/id-ring_sizes

We call budgies "bellies" in our house. I also love the bellies.

They do have such cute bellies, especially young birds with those huge feet sticking out from under their bellies, big floppy feet, so sweet! Marlow (right) looks cute with his fluffy belly and big floppy turned in feet, we call him big head floppy feet, in an endearing way he's my cute fluff bomb!

Sorry, can't help with the ring size question, not being a breeder. None of my birds have rings.

The size which has increased is of the exhibition budgies of champion breeders. Other budgies don't have much difference. I have previously cheeked with another company and realized that M was good for smaller budgies and L for exhibition budgies. I will try to get the link. Anyhow, it's good that you have figured out the right size for you

Thanks BB, it is confusing as many web pages say different things! some of them don't even list the size in mm which is no good as depending on where the company is based the letter sizes can be different, which is why I've gone with a UK company that lists the millimetres. The M size really did look too big, even Marlows giant feet would only just have fit comfortably methinks, although I think my mums birds would need a bigger size, her cocks are from a show breeder, the cinnamon grey is the biggest budgie I have ever seen! The hens are mixed though, so I doubt she will require her chicks to be rung, less confusion for me I've ordered the L size, I have none to compare in that size, but they are fairly inexpensive and I have time, I don't even have an egg yet, so can always reorder if needed.

You're welcome That's right, most don't mention sizes. Let's see how it goes with the size you ordered
