Indeed! My hens may be ambitious but they are all maiden hens, so I don't expect many first clutches to be smooth sailing, maybe the second clutches a bit smoother, Suki and Skylar did better on their second clutch, well.....until the plucking! but: 5 eggs first clutch, all fertile, 3 hatches, 1 surviving chick Second clutch 6 fertile eggs, 4 hatches, 3 surviving chicks. If it wasn't for the plucking they may have had all 4 hatches in the second clutch survive. 1 egg passed away about halfway through incubation (egg 6) and another appeared to go during internal pipping...or lack of, her head was the opposite end to the air cell in the egg, I say her as the chick was another plum eyed baby, sad times. I did think of ordering more bands at the time, but with how quick they deliver I think I'm safe, I hope I'm pretty sure I will need more though definitely when I have 4-5 pairs going! and possibly two clutches each depending on their health and the first clutch size etc. In other news, I noticed earlier Marlis egg bum is more obvious, she is spending a lot of time in the nest box, and is quite attached to it. Bob is looking after her well, both are eating very well and seem to love the egg food, overall not very exciting but the best I could ask for at this stage , I don't think it will be too long before the first egg, perhaps within the week, no ginormous poops yet but they are bigger, says the budgie poop expert

That's right, first-timer hens lay fewer eggs and ratio of fertility and survival can be low too. Anyhow, it helps a lot to pair the hen with an experienced cock. Considering their delivery time, I don't think you will have issues with bands. Come on Marli, don't keep us waiting

She is just teasing us now she has a proper egg bum today and the big wet poos have appeared! It's strange the things I get excited about these days egg 1 is imminent! or at least, the signs are very good

Looks like Marli is all set now. And looking at the last picture, she is in perfect breeding condition. Friendly hens are double the fun to breed

Still waiting Marli is spending more time in the nest box, she doesn't venture out much these past two days, I think it will soon be egg time! I worry if they take too long, but she doesn't seem egg bound or worried about anything, preening as I type so we continue to wait. I have had an egg bound budgie before, she survived it after a hormone shot and had antibiotics for any internal infection, anti-imflammatories etc, and as she was getting stronger a couple of weeks later she had a night fright and was found on the cage floor the next morning, so I do worry a lot! she was a very young bird that one and was with the flock when it happened, Marli is the right age, right diet, and if it does happen I am now equipped to deal with it. I'm beginning to know how men feel when women have babies! Once the first egg is out I will relax a bit I already miss having pinkies squeaking away in the nest!

You did make me laugh there It was required too after reading about your poor egg bound hen. I am sure Marli would be fine. It's just that some hens take longer than others

She has been in the breeding cage 11 days so we're easily on track I won't break out the vindaloo and pineapples just yet Her poops are very huge now, the time is getting closer, hopefully I can soon update with something better than budgie poop reports

Sadly no, I'm hoping this isn't a bad start for 2014! Marli had a bit of an egg bum for a couple of days which became very apparent on the 10th of this month, so it has been ten days since then and I am starting to get uneasy, I will give her another 4 days before I return her to the flock, she isn't showing obvious symptoms but I fear she may be an internal layer, hopefully not mind! no signs of egg yolk peronitis as yet so hopefully as she is a maiden hen it's just her taking her time! fingers crossed!

That's the case with some first timers and I hope same is the case with her.
