He's over two months we think; the vet was leaning more towards a possible lack of nutrition and poor housing conditions that caused his bad feet, but without a blood test we will not know. And if he has a blood test he has to be knocked out to take a sample, I dont think I could put the little guy through the stress of that.
For the safety of our other two all signs point to rehousing him.... which really is tugging my strings as in the space of a week we have really become attached to the little guy.

Hi Ross, really sorry to hear about the situation you find yourself in with your wee budgie Pete, when you have known the joy of owning a budgie it's so hard to give them up. Why can't your vet do a blood test on pete without knocking him out, when my wee boy Charlie was ill my vet used to take blood samples without knocking him out, and he seemed none the worse for it. I hope you get it sorted and are able to keep him.

Hi Jellybean,
The advice we got was that it can be uncomfortable and that there is a risk of bleeding out, however from what you are saying I think we will get a second opinion as I think we will proceed with the blood test if we dont have to knock him out.
Any suggestions of a good practice in the east midlands is welcomed.

Sorry Ross, I'm up in Glasgow, my nearest avian vet is 45 minutes away in Cumbernauld, I'm pretty new to the forum, but I think there was a thread on here somewhere listing Avian vets from all over the country. I'm rooting for you, hope you manage to keep the wee guy. Good luck with the vet search.

Sorry to be a pain, but have you got any pictures without his head cut off so we can see if we can give a rough age?

budgerigarsforum.proboards.com/thread/252/list-avian-vetsThis is a list of vets that members have used and have been happy with, if it is of any help. I don't think the feet issue is really an issue. Sure, they are a bit bent and twisted, but with proper perches and maybe (only maybe) a nail trim you may be surprised how much they straighten out, or even if they didn't, it is not a huge issue ..... may make him more clumsy but nothing serious. I would encourage you to keep him - take him on as a beautification project ...... in six months' time he really just might blossom into the gorgeous budgie he has the potential to be.

Hi Ross, this is a great website, www.naturalbirdco.co.uk/The two people who run it, Karen & Darran are really nice, I'm sure they would have perches to help Pete's little feet.

Looking at his iris ring, he doesn't look very old. But he is sitting on your hand. A lot of people work months to get their bird to even come near them let alone stand on their hands. He looks like such a sweetheart and as Hezz said in a few months time he may be perfect. I would keep him, he obviously trusts you already and is such a pretty bird despite his feathers.

Thanks for the link jellybean always good to get a new source of toys and products Your right starlingqueen he is still quite young, and we very much want to keep him. Again as I said further up we think his poor feet condition was caused by poor diet and having to fight for food and perch space, but the vet was saying if it was caused by a disease we would need a blood test if we are to introduce him to the other two. But we have found another avian vet (ill post details in other forum) which we will be getting a second opinion and blood test... without him having to be put under. Hopefully this is just being over protective as we really want him to get to know the other birds.

This site can do the testing for you without having to mess around at the vets, as long as you are comfortable taking samples: www.avianbiotech.com/They do have a uk/europe site too, I'm not sure where you are based but it's easy to find on google. I tried the link above and was warned by my internet security that it might pose a threat. My software being over active or a problem to be aware of? Just thought I'd let you know.

Hi all Went to see the second vet and ....... looks like our flock has increased from two to three A few more weeks of isolation to keep an eye on things then touch wood he can be introduced to the other two. He might not get full function of his feet but as long as we make sure he is working them and kept healthy they should get better. He has also started to lose some of his battered feathers. Ill post details of the vet for anybody in the midlands
