Hi I hope he's ok. I suspect it's not too serious in this case, but he is an old bird. Please don't be afraid to take him to the vet if you have to. Often if your bird gets to the stage where you notice they're sick enough to see a vet it can be too late for them anyway.. so it may seem like the vet made the condition worse, but often they are very very sick anyway. Budgies hide their illnesses and sometimes you need an expert to examine the bird to find out the best course of medicine.

thanks so much for your concern hezz! the blackness is getting smaller, i guess it really was old blood. he got pretty bored of me catching him to check his head so today i didnt hold him. tomorrow i might wash his head.. thanks for the tip! hey tinker, nice photo there. yeah, ive heard how budgies hide the illness until theyre very sick.. but he seems much better today. singing and flying like he used to. thank you! he seems content again. thanks everyone for the very helpful timely messages!!

That is good news, indeed, sinasi. Be very gentle while washing the area - if it is a blood clot it may start bleeding again when you start to sponge it. I doubt it will after all this time, but it just may. If he is, or has been moulting, this could be why he has been out of sorts, some moults seem to take more out of them than others ...... as mentioned before, a bit of hard boiled egg or dried eggfood can help with this.
