Hello! I need a little help to determine my budgie Chepi's gender! I always thought she was a female, because her cere was pink-ish ever since I got her as a baby and never turned blue. However, last night I was thinking about how chatty she is and how her cere has never turned to brown or white either, even though I've had her for more than a year and a half now. Then I realized since she's a recessive pied (I think?), maybe the cere color is different. From the research I've done, she (he?) would actually be a little boy but I just wanted to have opinions from other people to confirm. Here are some pictures of Chepi: Let me know what you think! Hi Chess. The last photo is really the only one useable, but it certainly looks like your Chepi is a very handsome boy!

Doesn't the cere stay that colour on a recessive pied ?
OR does it go brown and crusty if it's a hen in condition?
How old is the bird?

Adult Recessive Pieds cocks have pink/purple ceres. Adult Recessive Pieds hens have the normal ceres, i.e. white/brown.

Thanks for clearing that up BB, recessive pieds always confuse me.. Not sure if this would help, Marianne, but think Smudge. Smudge is a recessive pied. She always has a brown cere.

Thank you everyone! I really appreciate it. I'm glad to hear my suspicions were right... I'll tell him the good news! haha He really is a gorgeous little boy. His colors have gotten a lot brighter since I got him! (my avatar picture was taken just a few months after I got him so you can see how much he's changed!)

Some mutations do change remarkably with maturity.
