Just adopted it on Sunday and we named it Tequila! We are enjoying it and might adopt another, but we do want the opposite sex of whatever Tequila is.

I think Tequila is a beautiful young boy.

Interesting. So to date I have 1 person who thinks a boy, 1 person thinks a girl. Little confusing budgie needs to learn to tell me it's gender.

A photo straight on to the cere with no lighting or flash would help.

One photo is in a shadowy area and the other is brighter light.

If I only had those last two photos to go by I would lean towards girl, but I am still not convinced it is.

For your simpler mutations such as normal or single factors, young males start out with an even dark pink/purple cere. Young females will be blue. The more complicated mutations are a little different. Based on the pictures you have posted, like Hezz, my guess would be boy.

When I picked him out he was in a cage with many others and none really had colored beaks yet so I'm assuming they're fairly young and all roughly same age. He was running up to the others greeting them/ half picking on them. We found it entertaining.

It is not the beak colour you need to look at; it is the cere - the part above the beak - that is the indicator.

Breeders can tell the gender of budgies at just few days old. The difference of opinion on the Internet forums is because of the pictures provided. Even the pictures above are telling both male and female in different pictures.

If you see the white around nostrils in this picture, in person as well, you have a hen.

I immediately thought it was a hen. But then became unsure the more pictures I saw. I would hazard a guess at hen.

I got a second budgie! Same petshop and birds that Tequila was already exposed to so I went ahead and put them together. He is already chirping at her and seems so much happier with a friend. Totally different personalities so I don't doubt Tequila is a male. The female I did not realize was so mature until AFTER I got her home. Her eye is totally developed and her flights they trimmed back are regrowing again so she's been there for a while. Her cere is VERY white and next to Tequila you can tell they are different genders.
