Google ivermectin and South Africa together an find the name it goes by there - from my quick look is seems Ivermectin is well known. Even if you have to find the stuff in the US or UK, please start this process as soon as you can. Your birds are going to be quite itchy and uncomfortable, the one with the deformed beak is possibly finding it hard to eat.
Remember: Ivermectin 0.1% is the concentration needed to treat budgies.

Hi everyone. I've been trying to get my hands on ivermectin, but no such luck. My closest pet store only had this and a powder for the wings to treat mites. I tried a pet store who specialize in birds and they had nothing for mites. I have seen an improvement with Chloe since the vet appointment and her red, scaly growths seem to be clearing. Millie still seems the same but I'm hoping in time she'll get better. Is this treatment adequate? i have sprayed them once already. I'd appreciate your thoughts.

I am not sure how effective these sprays are, but want to remind you that the cage, perches, toys, feeders, everything needs to be treated as well, cleaned thoroughly and sprayed with F10 if you have it. Otherwise they can become reinfected quite easily.
Something that may be able to be used along with the spray ....... once you have sprayed them, and I don't know how often the bottle says to do this, you can smear a very light smear of vaseline, or other petroleum jelly, over the birds' feet (cere and beak too if affected). This smothers the mites that are hiding in the tunnels they have burrowed through the skin, beak or cere.

What does it say the active ingredient is on the bottle?

Hezz, i have been cleaning their cages and other parts regularly and I will continue to do so. Thanks of the tip about the vaseline.
stace, unfortunately the bottle has no ingredients listed on it. I tried checking the company's website, but still no reference to any of the ingredients.

You're welcome. This is just a random thought, but do you have a zoo, or something similar that keeps birds, close by??? If so a phone call might be worth the effort. If you explain what you have and what you are after, what you can't get hold of, they may, just may, be able to help with some ideas.

Thanks Hezz, there is a zoo nearby. It's a big zoo, so they keep the big birds like owls and condors and the like. If I see a recurrence of the red scales, I'll definitely make sure I phone them and ask for help.

Hey folks, I'm back again with a possible problem. Only one of my budgies seems to have a red area on his head near his eyes. In the past I've just sprayed him with the spray I've posted (see above posts) and it went away. It hasn't been a problem for a long time now, but it seems to be back. I did ask someone at the pet store about it and he said it wasn't mites. He seems to be in some pain when I touch the effected area. I didn't see any mites though. The rest of my birds, are just fine. What do you guys think?

It looks to me like the little guy has some sore looking pin feathers coming through. Have you seen him rubbing his head on the bars of the cage or toys? I think this is what he is doing as they do get itchy when coming through, and they have been bleeding. To try and give him some relief, I would give him a light misting on the affected area with some lukewarm water. Please make sure that the bottle you use to mist has had no chemical in it previously.

Hey jellybean, thanks for the reply. Yes, he is the only one that rubs his head against the cage. So it doesn't appear to be mite related? Should I just apply the water and let it heal on its own?

There is not very much more you can do, he'll be fine once they come through, it's the new ones coming through that cause the problems. A light misting will help to soothe them though.

A little bit of Aloe Vera in the water will also help sooth his poor little head. It does look sore.

As jellybean has said, the poor boy has only had a bad moult. In a day or two everything will be back to normal. Besides giving him a misting, leave the poor boy alone, it would be like prodding at a head full of pins to touch them. Some hard boiled egg or commercial eggfood would go some way to replenishing his protein levels, as well.
