Q. When did you first start to become interested in budgies and what sparked it off?
A. When I was eight years old I use to visit a family friend at weekends, he kept budgerigars and I used to help him clean his birds out
Q. What did your first Aviary/Breeding room look like?
A.It was a twelve foot by eight foot shed with 18 breeding cages a small indoor flight and a twelve by four outdoor flight
Q. Where and when did you acquire your first birds?
A. I was give 2 pairs from two great friends Don Robertson and Norman Craig
Q. Do you still have birds from these bloodlines?
A. I still have a few birds from the Don Robertson line though the Pilkington stud. Norman’s birds were clear wings and I only kept them for a few years
Q. Which Bloodlines have given you the most impact on your stud?
A. Dons family did me great in the early days and now I’m working with Barrie Shutt bloodlines
Q. Do you have a specific way of preparing your birds for the breeding season?
A. Cocks and hens are separated for three weeks before being paired just to break any bonds formed in the flight this also seems to bring the birds in to condition quicker
Q. Do you pair your birds by Visual appearance/Bloodline or both?
A. A bit of both for me
Q. What are your views on paring up related birds? Have you had any success with this?
A. I am happy to pair very close together but your records must be first class and I would only use this pairing once in a while
Q.How many chicks and clutches are your birds allowed?
A.As many as they want to have I will not split a good pair up just because someone somewhere says they can only have three rounds
Q.What differences are there in your feeding programme in the breeding and non-breeding seasons?
A. Only more of the good things during breeding , such as more soft food and vegies and groats
Q.What would you change about your set up if you had the chance (and infinite money to do so?)
A. Bigger much bigger
Q.Do you believe in preventative medication? If so what do you use?
A. Guardian angel is the only thing I use
Q.How do you deal with birds with feather disorders?
A.It a problem that can be controlled by careful breeding and not something to worry about
Q.Do you have a favourite mutation or variety?
A.Cobalt’s are my favourites
Q. Who do you admire most in the hobby?
A. My late father
Q.What was the best bird you ever bred?
A. A normal dominant pied sky cock when I was in the beginner’s section
Q.What was the best bird that you have seen from someone else's stud?
A.This year’s best in show at the World show in Doncaster
Q.What is the most important piece of advice you could give a beginner just starting out in the hobby?
A.Keep your wallet shut till you find the right breeder and then stick to him like glue for the first few years
Q.What more do you believe we can do to promote the hobby?
A. Open it up and get rid of all the dark corners that are away from the members
Q.What do you enjoy most about the hobby? Are you still as enthusiastic as when you first started?
A.Breeding and visiting friends
My favourite colour
Thank you Adrian.
