Hi, one of my fiance's budgies (8 years old approx.) has lost its balance and coordination. He hasn't been looking very good for a few weeks, the bit above his beak has lost colour and he is very fluffed up and sleepy. He is still eating regularly but can vomit from time to time, the main thing really is that he is struggling to balance on his perch. once he falls off he seems to panic and try to fly back up to his perch. but all he really achieves is flapping about on the floor of the cage. we have been finding it more and more difficult to pick him back up onto his feet. he seems to bring his feet back into the position they would be in if he was flying but doesn't want to bring them back underneath him to climb. On top of all this he is weak on his left side and seems even more reluctant to use his left foot than his right.
Might anyone have any advice as to how to make him more comfortable etc.? we were thinking about putting in some extra perches to help him balance.
Thanks,

Hi demoeight8, if you have an avian vet near you, I would take the wee bird ASAP.

As already said a vet is the only real option you have.

Let us know how he gets on; sounds like he could have had a stroke.

Hope the little one is feeling better. What did the vet have to say? A Happy, Healthy New Year to you both.

As he is old in budgie years, I have a bit of an idea. Something similar happened to 2 of my budgies when they were 10 and 8 years old. Im not sure if this entirely matches your budgies symptoms, but my 2 couldn't walk, and wobbled on their perches before falling off. One of them even held her neck turned to the side and couldn't even sit up straight. As Hezz mentioned, it could be a stroke, as that is what I believe happened to my 2. All the symptoms match, except mine didnt get sick, they simply lost their balance and coordination and died a few hours after that. Seeing as your budgie still seems to have motivation to try and get back to his perch leads me to believe something else is going on, of which I'm not sure.If it is a stroke, perhaps it is one not as bad as my 2 suffered? Hope he gets better soon!

Hi everyone, thanks for the support. Unfortunately Fitz had to be put down yesterday evening but it was defiantly for the best. The vet explained that the most likely cause of his stability issues etc. was some sort of brain tumour or some sort of neurological degradation (he explained budgies are 20 times more likely to develop cancers or tumours that humans) and it would save him the discomfort and stress to put him to sleep. Thanks to everyone for the helpful advice you defiantly helped us prevent any more stress for Fitz.

Really sorry to hear this news, but it sounds as if it was the best thing for him - poor wee love.

So sorry for your loss. You did the right thing by him, something we all have to do as pet owners who love our little friends.
