Well, I thought I will update this thread just in case someone ever comes across it and has the same question. I bought the Mimic Me device, and I think it was worth the $18. The birds definitely stop and pay attention when it first comes on, and they chirp back at it now. They aren't mimicking it yet, but they definitely listen to it. It definitely has value for pranking too. My husband gets a kick out of pushing "play" on it if I'm laying down for a nap so that I have to get up and find it while it whistles like crazy, and my daughter has made it record every number of ornery things, last one being "you worry about yourself" from the Youtube videos.

It'll be interesting if they do pick up some noises or phrases and what ones are first. To answer your previous question Merry and Pippin are both boys. As a newbie I didn't want to have to worry about baby budgies if I got a female and male pair!

As a newbie I didn't want to have to worry about baby budgies if I got a female and male pair! I am worried about that as well because mine are mixed gender (Gatsby male, Kady female, and Kiki undetermined). They are only a couple of months old right now, so they aren't sexually mature. I hope that means I don't have to worry about it just yet. I'm definitely reading up and trying to educate myself quickly. I have found the folks on this board to be an excellent resource...they tell me when I've done "naughty" things like clipping wings and using cement perches! It is quite helpful.

I have the mimic me device which I have played to my young budge, not realising it's a she! I have read that girls "don't talk" but am taking this with a pinch of salt because I think she might talk - maybe just not as much or as clearly or as often (etc) as a cock.
Anyway, take care with the mimic me machine, because one of the settings plays your recording intermittently - either every hour or every two hours, I'm not sure. The phrase only gets repeated once (this intermittent short blast, x1 repetition is what the unit defaults to after two hours of more intense repetition).
I left the device on all night, so the poor baby presumably had her sleep interrupted every hour (I fear) or every two hours (better, but still not ideal). The poor bird must have kept getting such a shock to have my voice blasting out quite loudly without warning in the silent dark room, in the middle of her sleep. I am more careful now!

Haha, well, I was a big fan of the Mimic Me device, but my family rebelled. They started making it say very irritating things and hiding it so that it would freak me out and/or annoy me to pieces. I still think it would have worked! Glad it wasn't very expensive!
